Jack Vettriano is a controversial artist, often depicted as a pornographer, his work can be sultry, erotic even, but there's nothing that makes me uncomfortable about it. We love his work, buying a couple of calendars a year depicting his many scenes from the golden era.

More from the talented Jack Vettriano. It's not just his work that I like, but the era that he depicts. It is of course, an era of haves and havenots, much of his work features staff in service like maids butlers and valets, but Vettriano is of humble stock, not for him the silver spoon, so I can enjoy his work.

Ian Haig was a brothel keeper, he used a sauna as cover for his trade. His place was raided by the police, among other items, they found a painting by Jack Vettriano that Haig had commisioned, it was said to be worth £500,000.

Less salubrious paintings but much more worthy of Vettriano's talent. Not all subjects have head wear, but there's a hat in every portrait.

My wife has always had a perception that, at times, has freaked me. I call her a witch, it's a playful insult that we use from time to time. Before she retired from the ambulance service, her fellow paramedics also came across her amazing talent, on hearing that I call her a witch, they too concurred that she must be.

Her reputation was cemented one day when she and her partner were answering what they describe as a red call, meaning possible life threatening. The ambulance was speeding along, sirens wailing, lights flashing, when suddenly, as if from nowhere, a driver of an Audi dangerously overtook them. My missus said out loud, more in anger: "A hex on you!" About half a mile further along the road they went past the Audi driver. He had pulled right off the road, on account of his offside front and rear tyres being punctured. A smug missus gave her partner a wry smile and said nothing else.

When they finally returned to the ambulance station her partner was going on and on: "Whatever you do," he said. "Whatever you do, don't ever cross her." Not if you don't want to end up sitting on a lillypad going ribbit.

My wife Tina, loves it when I buy her a Christmas or birthday gift that's out of the ordinary so one year, having seen Gil Elvgren's witch on a calendar, I commissioned a local artist name of Elizabeth Hamilton-Ross to portray Tina as Elvgren's witch. I gave Elizabeth a copy of a photo of a young Tina, to which she duly reproduced it and here it is. The first image is that of Elvgren's famous pin up witch, the second two, well, don't ever cross her.
