I was watching Casablanca on TCM last night, and I noticed a line that I never picked up on before, during the Paris flashback. It's when the Nazis are cutting closer, and Rick, Ilsa, and Sam are in that bar drinking champagne, and Rick and Ilsa are making plans to take a train out of Paris. Sam says something like, "They'll be looking for you," and Rick replies, "I left a note, they'll know where to find me."
What does he mean by that? I know he was a gun runner, and for unknown reasons, he can't return to America. Was he being sarcastic? Or cocky, like, "Yeah, I'd like to see them try to get me."
Any thoughts?
