A Mac Lachlan Air-Vac with an absolutely fascinating felt (but not Cavanagh Edge) brim treatment arrived today.

The brim is a bit more abbreviated than I would have in an ideal world. But the felt is extraordinary... exceptionally dense and springy.

It will be visiting the steam for some shape adjustments. Some prior owner appears to have been kind enough to stretch it up from 7 1/8 to 7 1/4. So that saves me some labor.

When it first arrived and I opened the box I was NOT happy. I guess this is what you get for free shipping. I was pleasantly surprised and relieved when the hat resumed its shape with a little manipulation. The felt is soft, the hat is light, it fits well, and I love the color. And, for $35 delivered I'm very happy. Before joining this forum I had never heard of "Lee" and would have passed on the hat; however, due to the postings in the Lee thread (which were positive concerning the brand) I took the plunge. Glad I did. View attachment 115239

That is a very interesting edge treatment. Is is a felted edge, or stitched on?

Thats pretty damn cool right there. Never seen one like it.
I agree.

The visual effect is similar to a Cavanagh Edge. But the contrast in color is really a nifty touch.

I feel like I've seen the type of treatment on the Lounge somewhere, but can't remember where and when. I'm at a loss on what search terms to use to try to find the hat that I think I've seen.

We are going to have to start calling you the "Mac Lachlan King"! You are definitely on a roll. Love everything about this hat Matt. Have you checked the tartan pattern to see if it is Mac Lachlan? I assume it is. Another beauty my friend.

It is stitched on. But then the inner edge of the felt appears to be crimped back towards the stitching. It makes the threading nearly invisible.

The first photo is from above the brim. The second... from below.

That’s so cool Matt. I wonder if that wasn’t someone’s custom idea at the time? I certainly have never seen such a brim treatment. Wonder if any of our hat building friends could do this?

Thanks Mike. Yeah... the tartan us accurate.

I've really been enjoying reading the history of George McLachlan's companies. Lots of labor conflict and workplace safety matters about mercury. He was front and center in Danbury's heyday.

Thanks Bowen. That would be so cool if the treatment could be replicated. I really love the way that it looks. It would be fantastic to see it on a hat with a broader brim.

I continue to be amazed at the amount of hat manufactures that existed between the 40s and 50s (and even earlier)! This piece fell into my lap and needless to say, I was pleased as punch! The felt is simply beautiful. It holds a shape quite well with minimal steam, and the brand name is unique (to me, anyway)!

Today, I give you a find from yesterday's visit to the antique mall. The Stetson "Notaliner!" Has all the markings, construction details, etc. of an early 50s Royal Stetson and, yes, the sweat is marked "Stratoliner." This is not a Stratoliner. The stingy brim is 2," the crown is ~ 5 1/4" and decidedly not blocked like a Strat. So, not certain if this one was reworked at some time (doubtful due to the blocking) or some sort of Frankenhat made from spare parts one day at the factory.

Go figure. Doesn't fit me (7 1/8), so it's being listed on the Bay.

Hey Jack:
Beaverbrook..that’s a new one on me too. Hopefully others may have some information on them. Nevertheless, that is a very nice looking hat. It looks like a very high quality hat. Congrats. Good get.
Be well. Bowen
