USN Deck Jackets period / repop

Discussion in 'Outerwear' started by 4444Design, Jan 27, 2015.

  1. I'm very happy with the Pike Brothers deck jacket. To echo Ian, yes the arms are a little long, but I can live with it for now. The cuffs just feel a little wide, there is no taper in them.
I'm itching to stencil the back now with U.S. NAVY. I'm not sure yet how though.

    Looks terrific, Mike!

When I had the sleeves shortened on mine, I also had the sleeves tapered, a bit, at and toward the cuff.

Overall, I've found it to be a very nice, well made jacket. It's really a keeper. Looks real good and functions very well.

What type of insulation is in that jacket?

You guys ought to check out At The Front. He's starting up with some Navy deck jackets that should be hitting the website later this year. He has some pics on his Facebook page.

It's a blanket wool lining with a celluloid plastic lining in between the wool and the outer shell.

Does the "celluloid plastic lining" breathe?

I'm not sure how much the plastic lining breathes, if at all, but there are 3 vent holes in each armpit. Honestly, I haven't noticed that the jacket is overly warm, like rubber raincoat can be, for example. In my experience, the jacket keeps me pretty warm into the mid 40's without a sweater, or the like, beneath.

The cuffs on my b15 are crap, the only really bad thing about it, keep meaning to do a MASH order and get something better to replace it. Really want a Black N1, so will probably be a Pike Brothers, since a Buzz William Gibson is out of my budget

My parents got me an At the Front N1 for my birthday...in XS. I'm a large. Looks to be well made. I think it will be the perfect weight for Texas winters.

These can also be seen throughout "Destination Tokyo" (1943) starring Cary Grant and the movie "Island in the Sky" (1953) starring John Wayne. Great USN deck jackets!

Welcome! I saw both movies in the last few years, once I was aware of the deck jacket in question. Both movies are good and were even better looking at all of the jackets and other gear. (Forgive me...I used “gear” because I just finished watching a Beatles documentary). At any rate, those two movies stick out, for me, partly because of those cool deck jackets.

N1 Deck Jacket by unknown maker. It has an Emar zipper. Any ideas on who made this puppy? I shrunk it slightly foolishly washing and drying it. I still like it though. Got it on eBay a couple years ago.

Got a bit carried away on clearing out jackets I don't/haven't worn for some time and realised I'd pretty much sold off all my cold weather jackets.

I thought on and tried an Irvin, but I'm still not sure on that. So I ordered the Pike Brothers N1 earlier this week from Aero, it arrived the day after it was ordered.

I'm a 44" and ordered the XL, I think the L might've just have fit me but I don't like jackets that are too snug and this fits just right across the back/shoulders and is comfortable for driving and such. Also a theme from many of the sales listings I looked at when looking for sizing info was people with too small jackets so I'll take some guidance from that.

I liked the reports of 'over long arms' on the Pike Brothers one as I do have longer arms and those fit well, was a bit worried on length but thats good to. Only slightly odd looking thing, to me, is the arms are quite 'wide' - to accommodate the lining I guess.

Having been out in it today, and with a drop in temperature, I'm really pleased with it, the wool lining extending into the sleeves in combination with the storm cuffs are indeed great for keeping out the wind. All in all very happy. If I get any decent photos I'll post one.

^ Great pics, thanks. That's one of my favourite movies but I never realized what sort of jacket he was wearing in that scene.
