The First Commercial Flight In History: January 1, 2017 would be marked as the 103rd anniversary of the very first commercial flight in history. On January 1, 1914, the pilot, Tony Jannus took off from St. Petersburg, Florida with one paying passenger aboard a two seater Benoist XIV seaplane. The flight to Tampa, Florida took a total of 23 minutes, and flew from a speed of 75 miles per hour & with at an altitude of about 50 feet from across the open waters of Florida.

The first passenger was the former St. Petersburg mayor, Mr. Abram Pheil. He had paid $400, after winning a very tough bid in a popular auction to be on that very first historic flight. ($400 was a princely sum in 1914, and it would be the equivalent of over $9000 in today's currency.)
