Anyone seen one of these up close? At $89 I'm considering one as an alternative to an "Indy" hat. Made by Stetson. Are they complete crap or what?

If it's new and a Stetson, I wouldn't bother. Akubra makes a lot of other fedora's besides the federation check out their website and see if you see something you like. For the money you can do better with either a vintage one or a new Akubra.

I can't speak to that particular hat, but Orvis has a store in Pasadena, and I've looked at some of the hats they offer. Their straws are adequate (barely), but their "felts" are cheap pressed wool. Their hats are made to roll up in a backpack and lug to the trout stream, and for fifteen or twenty bucks that's okay, but for the prices they charge, it's absurd.
