Aero Veste - Do these pics mean I can also do Stockman/Cheyenne?

Black Veste

Here's my black Aero Veste in FQHH. It's a size 46 (fits like a 48) with 2.5 inches added to both body and sleeves. Two piece back, roll-over stitching throughout, olive green gabardine lining, two internal pistol pockets.

I found the 48 Veste too baggy all over. The 46 feels great, but I'm still wondering if the trimmer Stockman or even Cheyenne should be my next coat. The only jacket I like is the Long Half-Belt.

Also, I'd like to make the sleeves of the button type, and maybe add another inch. I do like long sleeves. I don't think these have shrunk to their final length yet. Would another inch be ridiculous? I only ask as a + 3.5 inches Veste sounds freak like in dimensions

I'll eventually copy these pics to the special thread JanSolo created for us 'Big 3' weirdos.

I thought the only difference between the Veste and the Cheyenne was body length and hand warmer pockets? This is a size 40 Cheyenne with 27.5" arms and 32" body which looks a lot like a Veste on me, which I like very much.

Lear, that is absolutely stunning fit pictures.
I think its one of the greatest fit Ive seen here.

I would leave the sleeves as they are on the next one, but if you just cant sleep
I wouldnt go more then 0.5" extra from what you have there.

Yours look great too Dav, very nice. Leather looks dynamite!

Thanks mate

One thing I notice about the 'big 3' is how some wearers make them look like true overcoats, while others give them the appearance of lighter weight jackets.

Coincidentally, the khaki trousers in that pic were also from Aero. They were called Original Cramerton Cloth Army Khakis (or something like that).

Button cuffs... here I come...

Oops! Missed your post. Thanks for the pic Dav. I can see how similar they look. But I guess there's no substitute for actually trying it on.

Did you experience any shrinkage in the sleeve length? It seems that some do, and some don't. How much further down your wrists were they when new? That bulky jumper is probably throwing it off as well.

Nice coat

Hi Tito

Thanks for the kind words. No, not waisted at all. Just a standard 46 with the extra length on arms and body. That's why I wanted to know if the Stockman might be too trim for me. Remember that they are essentially coats and not jackets, so any kind of waisting could prove to be a gamble. Maybe it'll work on a slimmer framed person. I know that Ace Rimmer did this with his Veste. Aero would of course be the people to ask. Do post pics when it arrives.

Just measured the sleeves and yes they are about one inch shorter than when new plus the heavy jumper is adding to it, when worn with a shirt they do hang longer.

When I spoke to Will at aero he went to great pains to point out that the shapes of the veste and stockman are completely different, I have both and I had to have the body of the veste completely changed because it swamped me and looked like I was a kid in my dads' coat. The veste looks like it fits you perfectly,I can't see how you can improve on that, if I was you I'd just customise another one. If I ever get round to buying another aero I'm going up there to get it fitted. No mistakes that way.

If the sleeves shorten about an inch with wear, should I order my sleeves an inch longer than I desire? (I am placing a Barnstormer order very soon.)

I think it is better to err on the long side as they can always be shortened but not lengthened, thinking about it that was what Amanda said to me.

To add to the complication, it seems that some people have more of a sleeve shortening affect than others. Maybe it's the shape/length of the limbs. or maybe some folk have a weird range of motion. What I do know, is that I appear to have this affect on all my FQHH. The pics above were taken after I'd been yanking each sleeve (with thoughts of yet another coat), so they appear a tad longer than they really are.

We're now obsessing over something the average man wouldn't. I guess that's the nature of these forums

Please don't take what I'm saying as gospel. I'm definitely NOT knowledgeable in these matters. Simply my own experiences. The last thing I'd want is for anybody to cry themselves to sleep each night, blaming it all on that nasty Lear. Listen to what Aero have to say.

what i do is work the arms hard up and slow down a couple of times.
Then you go back to normal position slowly and see if the leather lands where you want. If not, the exact distance from the end of the sleeve to where you want it to be is the amount to add to the next jackets sleeves.

This will only work if the new jackets shoulder/beginning of sleeve, is at the exact same place as the last one.

Cordovan Veste

I had previously shown pics of the 48 cordovan (now sold), but never of my wearing this 46 cordovan. It's had 1.5 inches (unlike the 2.5 inches for the above 46 black) added to both arms and body. I've worn exactly the same under clothing, same lighting etc. Pics taken with flash, so you may not see much difference between this and the black one above. If anything, you'll now be able to see exactly what an extra inch on the sleeves & body gives you (for exactly the same model of Veste). I was rushing into place on the last shot, hence the off-balance stance.

Edit: Although similar in every way (except internal pockets) to the black one above, it is in fact a slightly trimmer fit in the body as well. No idea why.

How bloody tall are you Lear,if that's with an extra 1 1/2 inches, mine is normal length and it comes to the middle of my thigh! They boyh look great on you though.

To be honest, I'm not that sure. I'm going to say 6'2", but everyone tells me it's got to be more.

:eek:fftopic: I don't know if anyone else finds this: looking at pictures of fit, often tells a different story than when viewed through a mirror. Therefore, I think I'll stick with just 2.5 inches added to body & sleeves. I sometimes feel like a kid in a sweet shop, told that I can have whatever I want. But why tamper and complicate matters, simply because I can? I've therefore decided against button cuffs, as they take away from the clean uncomplicated lines of what will be another Veste.

I've got to say IMHO you've made the right choice,as I mentioned earlier the difference shape-wise between the stockman and the veste is huge,I'm 5'8'' with a 47'' chest(actual),my stockman is a 42" and it fits just right, except I could do with just a tad more across my shoulders, though it is actually giving and the 'break-in' I did(described in another thread),has really helped. My veste 'was' a 44" and I had to have it butchered,it fits across my shoulders perfectly but as I said in my earlier post the body absolutely drowned me. I had to have a lot of leather taken out of each side seam to make it fit. In hindsight what I probably could have done with,if I was having it made from scratch,is a 44" stockman with shortened sleeves. Hindsight is a beautiful thing, and seeing as I bought both 2nd hand it's turned out as well as I could have hoped.
In your own case, the veste fits you so well, unless you were going to go up to aero and have something bespoke, it's hard to justify the risk. It's a lot of money to spend and get something back that you're not as happy with as your vestes.
I suppose the old saw 'if it aint broke, don't fix it',kind of fits!

Nicely put bumphrey hogart. It's a lot of money to spend on any item of clothing. To feel better about it all. I tell myself it'll last a lifetime and beyond. To feel really good about it, I remind myself that I don't drink. smoke or eat junk food. The money saved in 6 months would pay for an Aero.

Hey, suddenly I feel guilt free! Thanks Bumphrey

Got sidetracked...

So, I've decided on a Cheyenne, if only for a slight change (it's fun). I like the length of the black Veste (first set of pics in this thread)., but want something trimmer for just t-shirt etc. Is the Cheyenne shorter or longer than the Veste.? Would I need to add the same 2.5 inches to body and sleeves, in order to get the same length?

Also, are the hand-warmer pockets proper pockets (with pocket lining etc), or just slits in the jacket to poke your hands through?

I'll get an opinion from Aero as I edge closer to ordering. Just thought I'd stop by here again, and pick your expert brains.
