Man, I've been out of it a while. This thread and developing story is great!! Carrie, congrats on leading this charge. All the "never an Aero" jacket heads need take a second look.

Now, let's see an A1 or Aeromarine in that hide :)

Andy, any chance this is the same tannery you're sourcing? (Sorry, had to ask ;) )

Thx for that, Schitz. Anyone know how this drapes compared to other mid weight hides? Seems about ideal for an A1 or A2

We've had a lot of questions about how this vegetable-tanned leather will age. Because we're sourcing this leather with John Chapman from Good Wear Leather, John is allowing us to use some of his photos so that we can show people how this vegetable-tanned leather will age. As you can see, the leather really grains with use and begins to look absolutely amazing! Pick your color and wear it, wear it, wear it!

Pretty much as good as endorsements get. If that detail-oriented, obsessive sonovabitch uses it, you know it's solid.

Carrie, please tell me the hide used in that lovely A-2 is Seal :D

That's a Goodwear A-2 in russet...

Those are photos of a Goodwear in an older vegetable tanned horsehide used by John at Good Wear Leather (we're sharing our leather batches with John, so he allowed us to use some of his photos)...we posted those photos up to show people how our vegetable tanned leathers will age... If you like this look, just order our Russet Full Grain Vegetable Tanned Vicenza Horsehide...

This is an extremely helpful forum. I just ordered my first Aero - A Board Racer, in Black Vincenza Horsehide which I am super excited for. Carrie and Wade at Thurston were super helpful!

Carrie, my understanding was that this leather was Shinki horsehide, not the Italian stuff you're offering. It may look similar because of similar production processes, but it isn't from the same tannery. Buyers should know that.

This is correct. While Shinki is top grain, our Italian veg-tanned leather is full grain. They will, however, age in a similar manner due to the similar tanning processes. However, our Italian leather will have much more variation in character and color from the start due to the nature of full grain leather.

Different companies use different definitions, but basically, top grain is corrected, or artificially embossed grain, am I correct?

Well, that's true, what's better depends entirely on ones preference, but the fact remains that the reason why top grain leather has to go through the whole correction process was because it couldn't have been used as a first grade leather, or the best leather if you will - though... I may have never handled the Shinki leather but I've seen plenty of photos of it and I find it hard to believe it is a corrected grain leather because... Why would it be? If it is a top grade leather, why messing with it? If it's not, why would all those guys use it? [huh]

I was referring to 'top grain' leather in general. I simply read, on several occasions, that Full grain leather is supposed to be the 'best' leather and that Top grain comes in at second place. I have no personal opinions on the matter as I have only handled full grain. I haven't handled Good Wear, Himel Bros., Real McCoy's or any of the other manufacturers you listed. I am simply stating what I thought to be the case, which is why I carefully use the phrase "supposed to be."
