McQueen's character used a burp gun for his primary weapon. A Thompson would have been a better choice,
and he wore a butcher knife instead of a Randall or Sykes-always wondered if McQueen personally selected those arms for the role.

"The Last Days" - Great surpising film from Spain. I guess I'd call it Sci-Fi? In this "post apocalyptic" tale people all over the world begin contracting a violent and aggresive strain of agoraphobia... Basically, if they try to leave whatever dwelling they're in they begin to shake themselves apart to the point where they seize up then die. The premise may sound silly on its face but it's so well acted, so well scripted and so well directed that you buy in almost immediately. I could've done without some of the flashbacks because the only way you can tell it's a flashback is by the length of people's beards. Still I found this an intriguing and riveting tale of the world threatened by something other than zombies, meteors, comets, aliens or the devil.

I always thought that Steve McQueen's use of a grease gun was a nice touch in "Hell is for Heroes". For cinematic purposes they are a bit different from the usual Thompsons that everyone carried, and in real life they were a lot better than their reputation would indicate.

Yes, for cinematic reasons the greaser fit McQ's protagonist persona and the gun worked well. Still the blade sticks.

GOG....sci-fi schlock from '54. Low on the budget, high on the cold war paranoia. Crappiest robot villain ever, but lots of cute redheads in the cast.

"Three Wise Girls" from 1932 starring Jean Harlow. A typical pre-code, depression era story about a poor young girl who comes to NYC to "have a chance."
She starts working as model, but quickly takes up with and becomes the mistress of a married man "who would leave his wife if she'd give him a divorce." I'll stop the plot recap there in case someones want to see it, but what surprised me was not the casual attitude toward sex, as that is very pre-code normal, but the general attitude of a woman needing to "hook" a man to complete her life.
Many pre-codes had woman running businesses, advancing in careers, etc., but this one put women in the more stereotypical role of having one purpose in life - to get a man.
That was a bit surprising to me since, again, many pre-codes don't take this attitude.
That said, I'd give it a B; if you like pre-codes, you'll think this one is okay, but not great, but if you don't like pre-codes or haven't seen any - I wouldn't start with this one.

"The Mating of Millie" from 1948 starring Glen Ford and Evelyn Keyes. Like a lot of movies, it starts strong with a good - if tortured - premise: a dedicated, young business woman - who has little interest in dating - wants to adopt the son of a widowed neighbor who was just killed, but she needs to be married to be considered eligible to adopt. She has recently met Ford's character, an unpublished author who just quite driving a bus. He is "not the marrying kind" but will help Keyes find a man.
Despite the forced nature of the plot, the movie is engaging so far, but then it turns into a completely predictable and kinda boring "search" for a man for her when we all know she and Ford will end up together (believe me, I'm giving nothing away that you won't figure out very early on). That's the problem. At the beginning, the characters are engaging because they aren't yet predictable and the plot isn't yet completely transparent. About a third of the way in, the characters and plot become predictable and the interest and charm of the movie goes away.
It is a shame as this happens to a lot of movies with early promise.

Great film, I caught half of it on TCM the other day.
Everytime I see sequence where they attempt to roast the Thing I'm amazed they didn't kill everyone in the room! The literally tossed buckets of gasoline around the room!!
John Carpenter's The Thing is a rare example of a great remake.

I concur.... that rare, VERY rare example of a remake as good as the original. But Carpenter only managed this feat by making a COMPLETELY different movie than the first. Only the setting and the title are the same. Everything else is brand spanking new!

Went to see The Imitation Game on Sunday evening. Fascinating story, and strieks the perfect balance between not over-labouring a point and not shying away from either the appalling way in which Turing was treated, or the risible way in which he received a pardon owing to his work at Bletchley, while none such is forthcoming for others similarly victimised.

Well, I mentioned my reaction in the Fury thread but I did like the movie. The fact that the reprehensible Shia could act like someone who is nothing like him was somewhat impressive.
The real German tank helped things and the fight with the three Shermans was a little off the era statistics though. The stats of the age said it took FIVE Shermans to take down one Panzer.
Pitt is beginning to get a reputation as a decent character actor here. He is good as the tank commander.
The ending kind of stretches belief though…..
