Downton Abbey finale.

I like Fellowes' intent for happy endings. Got no problems with that. If there was a rushed episode, this was it. I don't see why some of these characters couldn't have met their happiness over the full episode, or even in the back half of episode 8. I suspect it has a lot to do with how the UK views the series, with weeks (6 or more?) in-between episode 8 and the Christmas episode (our episode 9). Generally, Downton strolls at a nice, relaxed pace, which I LOVE about it. Not enough TV takes me to that easy-going state. This episode felt like a race, and that is my only misgiving about it.

The premiere of the recorded theater production of Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill on HBO. It features a tremendous performance by Audra McDonald, who manages to sound like Billie Holiday (vs. her usual perfect musical-theater voice) and is onstage in closeup for nearly the entire running time fronting a jazz trio, while running through a gamut of emotions amidst an alcohol- and drug-induced haze.

Unfortunately, the writing is disappointing: at just 90 minutes the play's just too long, redundant and sledgehammer-y, and virtually all of its biographical details about Holiday are familiar if you've done any reading about her at all (e.g, Wiki article), much less read any of the major biographies.

Definitely worth seeing for McDonald's remarkable (Tony-winning) performance... but it's kind of a slog.

Walt Disney Presents, Under The Sea. God, were we ever easily entertained back then!

These days even that guy that lives in Buford, Wyoming, knows everything about how his favorite movie was made, but 60 years ago there was still some "mystery" to it. And Under the Sea illustrates how much the industry has changed--these days they'd build a tank on a back lot somewhere so they could control the environment while filming the underwater scenes, and half of it would be CGI.

Just finished the new season of House of Cards on Netflix. This was another fantastic season on this program! Robin Wright and Kevin Spacey are absolutely ruthless and brutal this season. Fantastic writing and acting on this program.
House of Cards reminds me of Homeland as it gets better with each season.

I am eagerly awaiting season 2 of Daredevil..

Caught the first half of the season finale of Downton Abbey. I pretty much knew how the setups would go, since I saw the second half last week. But the first half contains the funniest line I've seen on the series:

Denker, the Dowager's lady's maid (as she paints her nails): "I see no reason why m'lady would object. . . . The color is '****'."
Spratt, the Dowager's butler: "That doesn't help your argument."
