Can this jacket be worn open? Most double breasted jacket looks awkward while worn open. However, I don't think the bootleeger is a true double breasted jacket.

I agree with you that a double breasted dinner jacket or suit mustn’t be worn open.

However, with bike/aviator jackets, the overlapping leather mainly functions as a windshield at the zipper area at higher speeds.

IMO optics when worn are largely dependent on the width of the leather band of the inner part. Most jackets I know, including the Bootlegger have a rather slim “inner ******”, so they can be worn open without any optical issue.

To illustrate the point I made:

Left to right:

Schott Perfecto: narrow windshield
Lewis Leather Lightning: medium width
RMC J24: broad windshield.

Definitely the slimmer the internal windflap the better a double breasted leather jacket looks when unfastened.
To me the bottom one in your photos looks too unwieldy and unbalanced, and although the middle one might be marginal the top jacket looks just fine.

Yes, I do see your point. Actually, I like all three looks, but they ARE very different.

The RMC is a very boxy cut, and the leather is not yet broken in, so the drape will get better. However, both the LL and the Schott are pretty slim fitting patterns, so the looks will never be the same.

I would tend to agree that a large windflap AND a slim fit would probably look off.

EDIT: if you inted to wear that jackeet on a bike go for a wider windflap, there is anoticeable difference in warmth when it is cold.
A thin windflap will definitely let some cold air in.

I've owned a few Bootleggers, in fact the jacket I'm wearing in my Avaitar is the "Super Heavy" Cordovan Bootlegger that has made a few rounds in these forums.

My question to you @onstar is -- What & why does it matter?
People can wear a cross-zip style jacket when and how they want to.

When I had Aero Bootleggers, I wore them primarily zipped shut, until the zippers broke on them, then I wore them open until a solid #10 zipper could be installed.

So do you have a Bootlegger that you want to wear zipped or un-zipped?
Or are you just thinking about one?

Since you give no context to the question, it's hard to know what direction to take this since you have not indicated if you have one, are thinking about one, or are just asking questions to ask questions.

Im thinking about getting a Bootlegger. I will wear it both zipped and un zipped, pending style.

Even in suits and jackets, the extent of double-breasted wrap can vary.

It is quite narrow on military uniforms, for example, and in men's suits it was quite narrow in the 1920s and then again 1960s-1970s. They were quite wide in the 30s and 40s though at the same time it was fairly common in those days to wear them unbuttoned because people still customarily wore a waistcoat underneath (and I think the heavier cloth in those days meant they retained a bit more structure while worn open than a newer one would.)

My tailor discusses the changes in double-breasted overlap over his decades of making jackets in this video. Interesting stuff and it's influenced my understanding of the different silhouettes you can achieve.
