Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

If Sterlingwear is truly gone, then that's sad news. Guess the pivot to medical gowns didn't save them; they never seemed very interested in further developing their sales direct to consumers. I had hoped to be able to gift my kids with peacoats when they came of age, guess by the time they do...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

What was the upgrade? I have a recent copy of Schott's 714US (the knee length peacoat), and the wool seems to have a noticeably smoother hand than my memory of a Schott 740N from college. I wasn't sure if my memory was playing tricks on me... Like many others on FL, so many years ago I...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Does anybody know what's up with the Sterlingwear website? I've been in the mood for another peacoat, but the website seems to have been wiped from what I remember several years ago...

USAF N-3B parkas - Let's talk about them!!

So reporting back on my N3B quest. I snagged a near-mint parka off eBay. Greenbrier 1980s production. I decided to forgo the real fur ruff in exchange for not having to worry about bugs getting to them. Besides, for 70 bucks I can't complain! I can see what people mean by the parka fit...

USAF N-3B parkas - Let's talk about them!!

Terrific info! So far I've nailed down on largely surplus (70s seem very common and quite cheap), lots of stuff on eBay by Skyline for some reason. For civilian coats, I see some Spiewak Golden Fleeces floating around. These would probably be attractive, although I suspect prices are about to...

USAF N-3B parkas - Let's talk about them!!

So from what I gather so far, black label good, white label not so much. Fur/Synthetic ruff would always be questionable, but can be replaced anyway. I know Greenbrier and Southern Athletic are good, guess I can add Skyline and Albert Turner. Outer fabric went from a cotton blend over to...

USAF N-3B parkas - Let's talk about them!!

Does anybody have any tips on spotting good surplus N3Bs? I'm eyeing a nice Skyline parka on eBay. The seller claims 1970s production. Is that a good manufacturer and vintage? Would the fur ruff be real or synthetic? Insight much appreciated!

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Yes, Kersey vintage peacoats are made in 38 Short! It took me half a year of waiting, but I was able to snatch one up from VintageTrends. There was a second one that same week, but has long since disappeared. None have appeared since. Some appear on eBay, but the conditions are often less...

USAF N-3B parkas - Let's talk about them!!

What would you guys recommend for good N-3Bs if I don't want to go the surplus route? I've been thinking of replacing my Alpha, but can never convince myself that the price for a Spiewak is worth it...

Is non-Goden Fleece Spiewak still good?

Not sure if this is suitable for Fedora Lounge, but I recall Spiewak being mentioned a few times here and there. So I might love my peacoats and overcoats, but when it comes deep winter with snowstorms and blizzards, a parka is still my go to choice. I've been looking to replace my battered...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

So I got lucky off VT and got my 38S, a 69 Dale Fashions (pockets are blue cotton, not corduroy). Good heavens is this a good coat. It's both heavier (in terms of weight) and yet slimmer (in terms of bulk) that I expected. Looking at the drape of the fabric you wouldn't think it has much...

    Repairing greatcoat buttons and buttonholes

I ended up sending the coat in to a tailor who can hopefully do a more professional job than I. Closer inspection showed that everything on the left side needed to be resewn, and two on the right side also needed some attention (Why? I don't know. Guys typically don't button to the left...)...

    Repairing greatcoat buttons and buttonholes

So I've come into possession of a British CD greatcoat, and the buttons and buttonholes need some serious work. For one, the buttons were sewn, or re-sewn, in a manner that shifted one side of the coat downward half an inch to an inch. I can do this particular repair no problem. It's the...
