items of clothing that make you cringe

I had no idea those *horrible* shoes existed, but now I do and I'm not sure they can be unseen! Vile!!!!

    What vintage won't you wear?

I would never wear those faux Victorian 1940s hairstyles. I loathe them and think they are deeply unattractive. Anything without some sort of waist definition is next on the list. They make me look like a brick, even though I'm slim.

Museum of London - Fashion Photography Online Collection

Nice, thanks! Funnily enough I was thinking of going to the Museum of London on Saturday, but was just too worn out from the week's work. Maybe next weekend. :)

What do you consider vintage colors?

Yes, it completely depends on the era as to what was considered fashionable, although there were colours for everyone, just the same as now. I would also say it depends on whether you are talking day or evening clothing and the time of year, etc. I go for 1930s and I suit Autumn colours (Dark...

    The Vintage Fur Thread

If the fur is greasy, say round the collar, you can rub Fuller's Earth in then brush it out. It is basically a powder that absorbs any grease. I believe warmed bran is also recommended. I will check my old books and see what they say.

Advice for putting on a vintage fashion show

I have been part of and written a number of vintage fashion shows and the most successful have always been the ones with a theme or a story, rather than just a collection of outfits. Ideas have been a family playing charades where the 'answer' leads into the scene of the outfit to be shown -...

Being called by your first name at work

I'm a Nursery Nurse ( or 'Early Years Educator' as they sometimes like to call us these days) and work for an agency. The children almost always call staff by our first names, but in my previous position, had to call us 'Miss' or 'Mrs'. However, some of us chose to be Miss - First Name (even...

    Sweater sets and dresses.

I have a whole book of 1930s knit and crochet sets for sale in my Etsy shop. https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/162897342/fifth-avenue-fashions-1930s-crochet-and?ref=shop_home_active

    Vintage belts

I am positively obsessed with buying 1930s/40s leather belts and have quite a collection, which is very helpful when dresses have lost their original belt. Being that I am tall, there is NEVER enough fabric in a hem for me to steal and make into a belt without spoiling the line of the dress.

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries - Aussie 20s TV series

Having a discussion on the costuming of this today on Facebook with several Ozzie/NZ chums. Only seen three episodes of series two and already come to the same conclusion - unfortunately a number of glaring costume gaffs, especially Miss Fisher's outfits. I know there are budgets, but it you...

How does a girl keep warm?

Their prices are beyond ridiculous. Cheaper to buy a proper vintage coat!

    1930s & Pear Shapes...Do They Mix?

With the focus of the mid 30s often being on the blouse or bodice, you can go with crazy collars, lantern, flutter or full sleeves, jabots, ties, scarves etc etc, all of which draw the eye up towards your face, so there is no reason not to wear it unless you don't think it's 'you'. Wear what you...

    Sweater sets and dresses.

It is more 30s, but I love wearing berets with my knit sets, since they are more casual. I have also seen pics of 40s knit dresses worn with tilted felt hats (but these are mostly the pattern photos). I have just moved and all my things are in storage, so I can't post any pics at the moment.

    30s Secretaries Dressing Inspiration

The strap at the back of 1930s handbags is just that - a strap to slip your hand through. It also happens to be handy for sliding your gloves through should you remove them to eat. After all, a lady doesn't otherwise remove her gloves in public. ;)

Help with identifying vintage women's clothing.

Grey and Peach Dress - 1950s Black Lace dress - 1950s Plain Black dress 1940s. Black skirt probably 1950s. Hard to tell as black does make it hard to see detail properly. Usually unlined indicates 50s on a pencil skirt like this. Cream Jacket later 1940s Hope this helps!
