Yep, and when people see me wearing a 3" brim fedora that looks very odd to them, I hope they assume I have a mind. I saw a guy walking across the street the other day on a warm day, in a long overcoat, sunglasses, and some other clothing that to me looked pretty weird. It was obvious by the way he was walking and glancing about, that he was very full of himself and thought others would be looking his way and admiring him. I could have made a reference to the "Long Riders" movie and I'm sure he would have thought I was pretty stupid.

In any case, the light was red and he was almost run over.

I don't see anything wrong with being an elitist, but I think there are plenty of us sporting cool fedoras who are mostly looking great in our own minds - no one else really gives a flip. (watch out for the red lights).

Giving a flip is covered in Hollywood Brim.

Being able to carry off a look usually means that you're acting naturally when in the look. Fred Astair and Cary Grant had a nonchalance that allowed them to be comfortable and casual whether in golf clothes, suit or a tuxedo.

Some people are seeking a sense of "Cool" from their clothes but their attitude and the neediness for that coolness makes them un-natural in what they do. That's why they then stand out but not in a good way. It's a key to why so many seek safety in copying those around them, safer to look the same and not stand out.

Lately it's been total envy

I've been wearing my Stetson Drifter often, two of my friends have both gone nuts, wanted to know where I got it, how much it costs and stated their desire to rush out and order one.

On the patio of the Depot Cafe at the train station in Centerville on a warm Spring afternoon. But you're correct it could have been in front of the Niles Cafe as that's another pleasant place to sit and watch the world go by.

Today I wore my Scippis Byron, a green parka, shabby jeans and working boots and as I left the house to buy a copy of the latest issue of the VW Scene International I got to walk on a long and wide paved path.

And far away I could spot two teens (12-14 years old) and as they were close I heard the word Cowboy and I also heard it repeatedly as I passed them but I didn`t react.

What do you expect from dorks wearing trousers the size of Fatty Arbuckle`s?

Yeah, I cant take too seriously any kind of comment from a person wearing pants with the crotch at the knees, and a 3-sizes-too-big flatcap sideways.

I almost forgot about this one - a couple of weeks ago, while walking to my car in the parking lot at school, another faculty member said "Hey, awesome hat", in reference to my Stetson Milan thin ribbon. He followed it up with "You look just like Eliot Gould in 'The Untouchables!'" It took me a second to realize he was serious - it seemed kind of dumb, but I think it was just a slip of the mind. So I guess it was kind of dumb in addition to be complimentary.

I just turned around and left since no one I knew was there anyway. So, I know what you mean.

don't be so touchy

My opinion is that we all shouldn't be so touchy about hat comments. What the heck do I care about offhand remarks? What I care about is whether the hat basically looks good on me, and whether it is working. If it is, and there are ways to know that (the mirror, the kind of looks you get), then you're good to go, and you have to wear the thing around. If there's something wrong with it, and with hats that is very easy to do, then maybe you ought to re-think the hat. I do not subscribe to the notion that anything anybody puts on, works. I think it's the responsibility of the wearer to do his best on the selection of the hat style in the first place, plus combine it correctly with clothes, to achieve a positive effect. If a person gets a lot of cracks in several different settings, or the cracks outnumber the compliments and admiring glances, it's time to check the mirror again and maybe pick a different hat. And what's wrong with that? It's just a hat. You buy 'em, you sell 'em, you wear 'em, you shelve 'em.

About two weeks ago in a smallish bus depot in Greece, an old man at the ticket counter saw me in my Panama and said "You are American cowboy?" I smiled a big smile and said "No, this is a Panama hat!" He was thrown for a loop as I think I exhausted his knowledge of my language. I gave a friendly smile, walked away.

Too many annoying Americans in Greece. I don't want to be among them, so I'm very polite here.

I have recently taken to wearing my boater. Hey, it's a nice warm and sunny time of year, and the boater makes me happy! I get lots of smiles. Seems to make other people happy, too. On occaision, I get the "Barbershop Quartet" comment. Can you sing barbershop? Thinking I can't ...or won't. But I break out into song...usually making up some irreverant ditty. Now, mind you, I do NOT sing well! The horrified look on their faces as I audition for the next "American Idol" spot is revenge enough. I never get a second comment.
