hi everyone, I'm very new to the lounge
but I have a question for the fellas
my boyfriend's birthday is coming up soon
and i wanted to buy him a shaving set
we both very much have a passion for vintage and golden era things.
At the antique store we go to, there was one of those one bladed razor like barbers used to use, and i saw him eyeing it.
now Im not sure quite what to buy.
is there a special shaving cream?
and the brush?
silly question but i just don't know.

Hey Nicole,
I assume you're talking about a straight-razor?
It wasn't just barbers who used them. Prior to 1901, EVERYONE used them (it was the only way for a man to shave).
A full, classic shaving-kit would need:
- Shaving-brush (Badger hair is best).
- Shaving-soap or cream (but nothing that comes out of a pressurised can).
- Shaving-scuttle or bowl (a cereal bowl will do. But if you want the real vintage effect, try and find a shaving-scuttle).
- Razor.
Depending on the type of razor, you will also need...
DOUBLE-EDGED SAFETY RAZOR:
- Double-edged blades (easily purchased at any good shaving-shop, or online. Sometimes you can find them New Old Stock in antiques shops, second-hand shops or flea-markets).
- Razor-sharpener. These were little compact doowhackies that you slotted your double-edged blades into, to sharpen them up (so that you could use them for ages). They're a bit tricky to find. Your best bet is eBay. I picked mine up at the local flea-market for $30. And they DO work. I got a single blade to last three months!
STRAIGHT RAZOR:
- Strop. Leather and canvass strop to smooth out the blade.
- Double-sided sharpening stone. To keep the blade sharp.
Probably a few other things, which I can't think of.
You might also want to get your boyfriend a shaving-stand. They're used to hold your shaving-brush in the right position and in some cases, to hold the razor (usually a double-edged safety) as well. They make neat-looking bathroom accessories. Or, you can make your own.

Feeling a bit humid this morning I was looking for a blast of face freeze when I got out of the showewr this morning, so here is what I did.
Cool water in sink.
Dab of Bigelow
Dab of Barbon
Custom Re-knot silver tip brush
Mixed in my 49 cent soup mug to an ubercool lather
Bladed off with my Ikon handled tech with an Astra Superior Platinum
Finished with cold water rinse
Alum Block
Barbon aftershave
Face was still freezen 10 minutes later.
Waiting patiently for My Osage Rub.
Scent of the Day Pinuads Citrus Musk

DE blade from Walgreens(el-cheapo)
Williams soap
1950s? era Century brush that I bought recently as part of an old leather-bound shaving and shoeshine kit
Dickinson witch hazel, followed with a splash of Pinaud's Bay Rum...feel the burn, baby!
I don't like this particular brush, the bristles are firmer than those on my "new" brush that I bought at WalMart over the winter.

Soap: Proraso shaving soap.
Razor: No-name three-piece DE razor. Gold-plated.
Blade: Wilkinson Sword.
Spoon: Random white ceramic spoon. I use it for scooping and measuring my shaving-soap.
Brush: Windsor badger-hair brush.
China-thingy: Antique Victorian shaving-scuttle. Been experimenting with this thing, to see if I can use the top of the scuttle as a lathering-bowl with soft shaving-soap, in spite of the presence of the drainage holes.
Results of my tests have been amazingly positive. The scuttle cost me all of $10 at the local flea-market, and it's in perfect condition.
