Sydney meet up in the Mountains?

Would any Sydney Loungers be interested in a day or evening out at Katoomba?
A new member (James71) suggested it in another thread & it sounds like a really good idea, because it's beautiful up here this time of year.

We could go to the Carrington
http://www.thecarrington.com.au/news.asp?pid=12

or the Clarendon if there is a band worth seeing
http://www.clarendonguesthouse.com.au/index.html

I know the area fairly well, we could even go on an art deco architecture walk one Sunday afternoon.

Any takers?

Katoomba

Good evening all,

Further to Ms Loisides suggestion of a get together in Katoomba, I would like to extol the virtues of this place I am lucky enough to call home, and the various venues around town that evoke an unmistakable atmosphere of times past.....

My favourite venue is, of course, the Carrington Hotel, or as it is known in Katoomba, "The big house". It was built in 1882 and was described in the early 20th Century as the only rival to Raffles in the British Empire. It has been beautifully restored and maintained and is without doubt a standout attraction. Ive enjoyed many an evening sitting in the lounge, smoking a pipe and drinking cocktails by the open fire. The lounge is set up with many couches and coffee tables in little individual loungeroom kind of affairs. Suit and tie is not mandatory, but de rigueur amongst my friends. It sets the mood..

The Carrington in all of its Victorian and Art Deco majesty is not to be confused with the Clarendon, an intimate live performance venue seating about 80 people or so in the Art Deco style. It has an excellent bar and lounge.

The Paragon Cafe is world famous for its hand made chocolates and beautiful art deco decor.

In a nutshell, it was the atmosphere as much as the breathtaking natural beauty of the town and its surrounds that drove me to move up here in 2000. Being a musician the bohemian art and music community up here appealed strongly to me, and as was once noted on this board with regards to Melbourne, I can quite safely wear my fedoras and scarves and jackets with impunity.

The fact it is cold enough for "suit weather" for at least 9 months of the year is also a bonus! Winter is the time to visit, though be warned:- At the end of July the Winter Magick Festival brings hordes of people to Katoomba for our big celebration.

Katoomba is a town stuck in the past, and frankly, that suits me just fine.

Adieu,

James

P.S. Oh, and the Hattery is here.

I'd have a crack at googling some of these terms and in different combinations and you should find something: Australia, farming, pioneer, history.

THE WAY WE WEAR VINTAGE FASHION FAIRS

It's on again!

I went to this a couple of years ago and there was lots of fine stuff

The Victorian one is next weekend at Williamstown Town Hall, also in Sydney and Gold Coast
Saturday 19th June 10 to 5 PM, Sunday 10 to 4PM

Not sure if it's best to get there early Saturday while there is lots of stuff there, or later on Sunday when there maybe some specials available

I have an email discount voucher that takes the cost down from $12 to $10. Let me know if anyone wants a copy, I can email it

Here's the web site http://www.thewaywewearfairs.com/thewaywewearfairs/Welcome.html

Waiting for Godot

Did any Melbournians see the Theatre Royal Haymarket production of Waiting for Godot? It's on in Sydney now & I'll probably go next week.

Ian McKellen is a big draw card & the reviews are good, but before I fork out $150 for a ticket I'd like to know if any Loungers went & what they thought of it.
