Indeed I do, but only on the weekends

I do enjoy boosting my coffee with some kind of hooch. But which one to choose? Decisions, decisions.

Mr. Fletch, I really enjoy adding Kahlua to coffee.

I have read about this golden era practice...but I haven't be inclinded to try it. I keep my indulgence to the PM and I don't drink coffee at that time.

Has anyone tried this?

Irish Coffee is a-okay by me, but it's more of a treat than a routine. I've tried Kahlua in coffee and I don't really care for it.

My family is Italian on my paternal grandfather's side. His Aunt Susie (took the boat over here) used to put whiskey in tea. It was thought medicinal for chest colds and certainly warmed the bones on a cold winter day/night. I remember having a bit as a kid, made weaker than the adults of course.

"Want some whiskey in your water, want some sugar in your tea?"

Hi

I spent a week in Fort Lauderdale with my college room mate, and we had Kahlua and coffee every day, we about had to. I admit that it's weird to add coffee flavoring to coffee, but it's sweet and works out well in the end.

I had an impacted tooth, and since the dentist was closed being Friday night and all, I self medicated with hot tea and bourbon. Your tooth still hurts like heck, but it doesn't worry you so much after about 8 of them. I got to see the dentist about noon on Monday and looked like crap even though my tooth was totally dead and didn't hurt at all anymore. I could have gotten the good drugs for my hangover, but felt guilty about it.

Irish Whiskey in coffee is good, as is bailey's, but Kahlua is still my favorite morning drink.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I have had Trix and Stroh's beer for breakfast, but that's because we were on a canoe trip and that's what we had left. It MAY BE AN ACQUIRED TASTE. lol

A few years ago I spent Christmas in Switzerland, and on the ski areas there were open air bars, carved out of ice, which sold coffee or hot chocolate liberally spiked with schnapps and topped with whipped cream. Yum! You could rent yourself a deck chair and a blanket and lie in the bright, glary sunshine getting warmed from the inside!

And I only have hazy memories of a weekend spent with my 87 year old great-aunt in Norfolk, because every time I turned around she was pouring me more booze. It was pretty chilly, but I probably didn't need that much rum in my tea when I came in from shopping!

I've seen a lot of recipes etc for Cafe Brulot, but I've never tried it. Maybe one day I will get to New Orleans and have it in the correct atmosphere.

As the north of Ireland holds a special place in my heart, may I recommend St. Brendan's instead of Bailey's? Way better. And perfection in coffee (or straight!)

I enjoy Irish Coffees. Although I think I wasn't a fan until I tried Buena Vista's Irish Coffee in San Francisco. The cream floats. It makes a difference.

Overall preference, though - I like a little cognac in my coffee. It's something I picked up in Russia, of all places, and it's still the only way I drink cognac.

A brandy snifter with Grand Marnier, and a side of coffee. Mix. Nice. It's also good to clean your coffee mug (better if you don't stir the coffee, so there's lot's of sugar) with congac.

In the book version of "For Your Eyes Only," as Bond prepares for his mission, he buys a large aluminum flask, filling three quarters of it with bourbon and the rest with coffee.

Mixing spirits and coffee has always been an interesting proposition. The coffee is pulling you one way, the alcohol the other...Not something I'd do before (or at) work at any rate...maybe after shoveling snow on a weekend...

But given my (very) limited experience with the practice, I think Bailey's Irish Cream or Kahlua are really best suited for the endeavor.

I will however defer to Ian Fleming's expertise on the usage of bourbon as an ingredient. That man was a great epicurean and if it's good enough for JB, it's probably good enough for me. I'll have to wait until next winter to find out.

not usually, but when I have a "bed" day or when on vacation,
I like:

Brandy with a smidge of Kahlua and a spritz of Baileys
in mine.

Super heat the java first and then add the hooch.

Do you mind elaborating? Are you describing one drink, or two?

Naw buddy, two different drinks. The first one's just double Grand Marnier (not the stuff with the creme in it, that's for women) in a brandy snifter and a black coffee on the side, when you order it at the bar, just order a black coffee on the side. make sure you tell the waitress not to bring all the crap that goes in the coffee. Then just pour the black coffee into the oversized brandy snifter.

Don't ever bother ordering the irish creme or creme Grand Marnier, you just get stiffed on the alcohol, just get straight Grand marnier.

If you want the fancy stuff at home, get 35% creme mix into whip creme, mix expresso coffee, or just really strong coffee with creme and sugar in a pitcher(so it can cool a little) Pour a little Grand Marnier into a bowl and roll wine glasses in it, then roll the wine glass in a bowl of sugar ( you'll get a rim like you would have for Ceasers only with sugar) let dry. pour Grand Marnier into glass, add coffee, and top with liberal amounts of whip creme.

Enjoy my friend.

I occasionally add about a half measure of brandy to a strong black coffee.
The combination is very nice, it goes down just too well to to make into a regular habit.

Another pleasant combination for people who prefer a sweeter drink is cocoa or drinking chocolate with a dash of Grand Marnier or Southern comfort.

My Travels with Charley

In Steinbeck's travel book, "Travels with Charley" he offers coffee and applejack to a guest. Made me curious so I tried it. Actually pretty darn good. Trouble is, I don't drink liquor in the morning or coffee at night (Steinbeck was offering the coffee in the evening). Noonish?
