Check it out.

I am taking a 5 day camel trek in Jordan at the end of the year. I am really excited about it. It also gives me the perfect excuse to buy some cool trekking gear and kit.

Please make me some recommendations for attire and equipment. Links to where I can find your recommendations get extra points.

Thanks all!!

Don't forget to get a shemagh for head & neck protection in the sun. It's a great multi use product & you can pick one up at Blackhawk or for that matter your local Army/Navy surplus store.

It'll keep the sun off your head when hot out & rolled up will act as a scarf and do a bang up job of keeping your neck warm. tug it up a bit and your ears, mouth & nose are covered in case of any minor sand storms. In that neck of the woods it is a good thing to have in your travel kit.

Cheers!

Good advice on the head covering, but I recommend buying it when you get there.

"Picked this up in Jordan on a camel trek" sounds better than "bought this for my camel trip from Sarge's Army-Navy on Main Street."

Pay attention to material--a lot of the ones they try to sell tourists in Egypt are all/part polyester.

Of course, you'll be needing a grey-back shirt, some boots and a pith helmet, too.

A Djellaba might be a useful item-

You'll also need a faithful photographer to preserve this memorable
correctly-attired trek, so you'll be able to enjoy the images for years to come.

You could take the Dr Otto Schaden approach!. I met this chap last year in Egypt, a really intersting and thoroughly nice chap. He discoverd the last tomb in the V of the K (KV63).

Remember, you may need eye protection too.

Stewart, you can go a couple of routes with the clothing. The first as some of the previous posters have mentioned is the western khaki costume approach or you can go a bit local with the classic Arab headress and other bedouin dress which your guides will be happy to produce. I prefer to mix both styles.

The fellows that guide those trips are local Bedouins and nice fellows and will be busy posturing for tips and trying to put the make on easy western women (if you have any in your group). I'm sure you will have a nice trip and impress your friends with the photos.

Hi

The British were the first to popularize Khaki (from India), and well, the sun never set on the British Empire. If you wear khaki, you might be thought of as being a colonial type, and the opposite of that is "wogs". I have never left the US so I'm asking out of ignorance, but are there places that wearing khaki would be a problem? Is he going there?

Sorry to be so blunt / nasty, but I figured it would be the easiest way to get the problem out. :(

My college room mate spent his senior year in France, and after a month, he hated American tourists too...

Mike, this is an old post from 2008 and thus the fellow has long since completed his trip (if he did go). Your question though is valid and I would say it depends where you are. Jordan is a nice peaceful place and simply dressing modestly suffices. Khaki is not frowned on but it is nice to mix with local dress. The fact is in those parts any westerner will be identified from a mile away even if he is trying to play Lawrence of Arabia in full Arab regalia.

Back to khaki I once had a very nasty experience in South Africa wearing it as a local group at the time known as the AWB was using it as a uniform. They werent real popular with many of the locals. Lessons learned.

Not so. Burton, you must be looking at my join date of 2008. The trip is not until November 2010 and I will most definitely be going, along with 6 of my buddies.

Oh man, that sounds like a great trip! I wish I were young enough to do a trip like that. I hope when you get back you'll share lots and lots (and lots) of your pictures with us.

tried to send you a PM

Stewart, I tried to send you a PM but you don't have enough posts to get them yet, I guess.

I was going to suggest a web site where you can share you pictures and stories after you get done with your trip. I've written several travel articles for this site.

I'm not sure you can see this page without actually signing up, but it's worth a try:

Stewart, my mistake and hope you have a great trip. Looks like there is a lot of good advice being submitted for you to look at and evaluate. Personally I would pay a bit more attention to people who have actually been there. Good luck!
