Biltmore Genuine Milan

NWT but I'm not sure when it was made. The 1971 could be a product # or date? Slate color is a blue/green/gray. Quite nice Canadian hat and decent sweatband.

John G. Macas, president and owner of a hat company that has kept Baltimoreans in fedoras, tweed caps and cream-colored Panamas for nearly 70 years, died Tuesday of heart failure. He was 72. Mr. Macas grew up in and worked his entire life at Ecuador Hat Co., the business that was founded by his father, Roberto Macas, in the early 1930s. Born in New York City, he was raised on Mulberry Street and attended Baltimore public schools. The elder Mr. Macas was born and raised in Ecuador and moved in 1925 to New York to work in a straw hat factory.

I posted this in the Sunbody Association thread, but for those who not read that one: Here are some camera-phone photos of my new hat from Sunbody. I got an open-crown so as to get a bit more height on the hat and had them trim the brim to 2.5 inches. The one I bought from them last summer is more like 2 3/4, and that's just a bit too wide for me -- I'd sell it if anyone's interested. It looks just like this one -- same edge binding, same ribbon. It's a size 8, but they tend to undersize at Sunbody. I'm a 7 5/8 extra long oval, so I have to get larger sizes. It's based roughly like my new one is, but it's so easy to rebash Sunbody hats, that's not really an issue one way or the other.

I stopped by J.J. Hat Center to have Kevin bash the open crown for me and have the navy ribbon put on. I think he did a nice job, and they don't charge for cleaning and shaping, bless their hearts (they charged $20 to put the ribbon on, and of course I tipped Kevin for his troubles).

All in all, I'm pleased. The hat was a bit snug front and back with big gaps on the sides, but Kevin reshaped it nicely -- it fits well front, back and sides now. He uses a bit of duct table under the band to ease those side gaps (stretching it front and back helped with those, too), and it's surprising how well that works. (He did it on the hat I bought last year, too.)

I fired what I considered to be a low snipe at this butter-colored Strat and won it. It arrived yesterday; will need a good cleaning but no major issues at all, and it fits! More pics soon in the Stratoliner Society thread.

SWEET color!!! Great price, too! If you don't mind me asking, how large is your hat collection now? It seems that about every other week (well more than that) you're picking something up from the 'bay.

Oh, for a long time...since last November. I went on a real binge from Jan-Feb, seemed like one great hat after another came my way for good prices. Now I'm down to a couple a month and then only ones that are a rare color or iconic model that I'll wear. One problem is, I keep putting in low snipes on poorly listed hats and I wind up winning them. I need to quit that before I get a bunch of junkers but so far my luck is positively reinforcing my behaviour...oh, and Fedora Store selling Beaver Brand semi-customs for around $150 isn't helping either.

Looking at your recent purchases, I think it's fair to say that your collection is becoming rather spicy, not just Salty...

Thanks, Mario - it's not as yellow as the photo makes it seem. It's more like a light khaki tan with heavy peach undertones. Once I get it cleaned up I'll post better shots in the Stratoliner Society.

So you started around when I did; later November is when I got my first fur felt, but things really took off in January. I'm up to around 16 with the addition of my latest Work of Art.

...So, if you're giving up eBay slowly, you could always... ahem... share some of the luck with me...

I remember back earlier this year when you came in with that post of about seven of your eBay wins. And you're still beating me by about 2 to 1.

Human, just human. Perfectly natural habbit. I did exatly the same thing, buying hats where I could grab them. Then came a moment when I stopped and after the dust had settled, I finally took a closer look at all the hats I had accumulated over the past few months - and started wondering... By now I've laid off about half of my collection again, only keeping the ones that...talk to me. Some hats talk to you, don't they? No? Well...mine do talk to me, at least a few of them. Those are the ones I kept.

Customized New Alessandria

I had the good people at Bencraft to customize a new navy blue Alessandria for me by changing the thin ribbon for a wider one to make it a dressier hat that I would wear with a navy suit.

I took these shots in very bright sunlight so the navy and the details would show online.

Rummage sale find

Found this swell Brent Airlite for $4.50. Unfortunately, the seller said the box had gotten ruined sitting on a wet floor (not the hat).
It is 7 1/8, too small for me but perfect for my lad John.
