Alright, boys - you made me do this...

:eek:fftopic:

Seems to me, the whole point of this thread is to use vintage lids from the 'Bay to spur further discussion about...vintage lids...;)

No such thing as OT here...:D

Cheers,

Here's what I would agree with. In a catalogue generally geared to western hats, the OR-style Stetsons would quite appropriately be described as "lightweight." Compared to a western-weight hat, that comparison would absolutely hold up.

That being said, "3X" and "7X" don't necessarily denote a particular weight -- they instead describe a felt content/quality/finishing distinction. As I mentioned in a previous post, the OR family was, essentially, consistent in weight. I have many ORs in various quality designations, and it is very fair to describe them as being generally comparable in weight. (I also have a couple of vintage 3X westerns, that are decidedly "western" in terms of weight.) As a general matter, I think that the Stetson 25 is no different than its other OR brethren weight-wise. Quality-wise, it's a damn nice lid. :)

Cheers,
JtL
I agree entirely about the 3X 7x meaning, but I was apparently wrong in concluding that a particular quality designation would be consistent for a particular model such as Open Road. The other 7X's I have are definitely Western weight and apparently the Open Road may have been made in both weights. Perhaps the Last Drop... liners designated the Western full weight as opposed to the crest liners standard (medium weight)?

Robert -- I just want to make sure I'm understanding you. Are you saying that you have 7X ORs in western weight?

I know that Stetson made a Boss of the Plains in a 7X western weight. But, an OR? If so, photos please.

And, come to think of it -- for posterity's sake, perhaps we should move this over to the OR Guild thread...

Funny how they both have the exact same effed-up brim shape. Looks more Crazy Guggenheim than Michael Jackson (and this is beside the point, but Frank Fontaine was a better singer if you ask me).

We need gtdean to weigh in here...I certainly did not have a sense that his 50's Stetson 25 was "lightweight" -- and, as a general matter, it would surprise me to learn that the Stetson 25 was actually lightweight. This will be interesting to explore.

Cheers,

Sorry I missed this totally enjoyable exchange.
Now, I would not consider my Stetson 25 as "lightweight" compared to my 100 or the 3X Open Road that IndyCop now proudly sports on his enormous melon head. I always felt the 3X was a little heftier but that was due to the 3" brim over the slightly smaller 2 3/4" one on the 25. I consider my 25 to be one of the Beaver 25's on the row below the Beaver 25 Open Road on the vintage ad posted. They both are described as lightweight.
There is no significant weight difference in my 25 & my 100, just a whole different level of finish to the felt & the level of the attachments. JMHO

Someone plumb STOLE this one. No other way to put it... wow, w the box & all... hope it was one of ya'll!

Yep. If I hadn't bought one a month ago almost exactly like it, the price would have been a bit higher.

I'm 90% sure that's actually a roll-up, and the box isn't original - crease in top of hat, funny bends in reeding, wrinkling pattern of the sweatband.

But as you said, stolen.
