Sorry, but I get *really* annoyed when sellers pull an Auction down because someone offered them money outside the auction (I believe outside Ebay rules?), especially when there are already bids.

It's unfair to other bidders. If they want a straight sale, put up a BIN price. I make it clear in any listing I do that is not acceptable behaviour to me, so don't ask! :rage:

Unfortunately it's not outside Ebay rules. I was bidding on a vintage bag, the seller cancelled my bid a few days later and sold it in a BIN to someone else. I emailed Ebay about it and they replied that sellers have the right to choose who they sell to just as buyers have the right to choose who they buy from. It is such bad style though and I'd never do it either.

But that is crazy! If I bid on something, I can't then say "I've decided not to buy from you" so how can the seller have that choice?

Exactly! I was really shocked, too. I have sold many things for £0.99 that were clearly worth more and I it was annoying, but I wanted to honour the system. Recently I even lost money because the shipping charges Ebay lets you add were too low for the weight of what I was sending, and I did it anyway and put it down as a lesson learned not to list low anymore.
I have had bids cancelled in the past and even though Ebay says you can see the reason for the cancellation, I have never found it and never complained before.

This is the message they sent me:
Thanks for writing to us about this seller "^$£$£" who cancelled your
bid for the bag (item *^&^$£W£). I'm sorry to hear about this and
can understand from your email that the seller has already relisted this
item.

Please understand that all eBay members have the right to choose their
trading partners. Just as a buyer has the option of choosing trading
partners by choosing which auctions to bid on, a seller also has the
option of choosing trading partners by rejecting or accepting bids.

Because of this, sellers may cancel bids and end a listing at their
discretion. I understand the inconvenience this may cause you, and I do
sympathise.

I LOVE this. Would've fit too, but it had uneven fading and went for over $100.

amazing color block dress. Went for around $60, but not in the best shape and it would've been difficult to tailor to my size.

I wanted this so bad! Went for $80 though, too big, and from what I can tell the construction would've made tailoring kindof pricey.

My recent heartbreak...

Love love LOVE this dress...anyone else see this or bid on it? Such a gorgeous 30's dress...I never even got around to bidding because the dress SKYROCKETED out of my price orbit....LOL guess how much this went for??? $445!!!! OMG can you believe it? I have never paid more than $250 for a dress, and that was a formal gown! Still, would've been nice if I was a millionaire!!!

I was planning on putting quite a lot on it. Maybe they just really had no idea what it was worth so the price sounded really good.

Yes, I saw that but it was already too expensive. It is beautiful though! I adore this one, but it's £450!!!

Who are these people with $450 to spend on a dress that they haven't even tried on?
I'd have to know that it fit like an absolute dream before I'd even consider something sooooooo pricey, and then figure out how to sell my vital organs in order to pay for it.
Clearly it's not dealers, so someone must have wanted a pale pink dress really bad!!

It's a pretty dress but I've seen similar for a lot less than that, in the flesh where I can check them for holes, whilst keeping my purse firmly in my pocket.

^^It's not sold yet, I've been admiring it for months! The seller has a lot of other vintage dresses listed for less, so I guess she just figures that one is special or has a high market value, I don't know. I read recently in a Dita von Teese interview that she spent $70,000 on a dress for a performance, so I guess it depends on the dmeand.

ETA: And it's £450 sterling, which would make it ca $687 at the current rate!!

WELL! I am really shocked by this. I understood that for a buyers to offer to buy something without bidding on it was outside Ebays rules and that you are offered no protection through them should something go wrong.

Seems like now it's f*** everyone and just do what you want. That CHEESES me off. Ultra :rage: !!!!

We have been offered high prices to close auctions early on some rare WW2 militaria. We would have been better off in the end but we said no, in the spirit of being fair and *open* to everyone, everyone bids their highest bid and that's what it sells for.

Yep, these are individuals that definitely have money to burn. I know I've said this before on here, but I feel like its becoming an epidemic. I swear a few years back dresses like these would have gone for $150, maybe $200 max...but now dresses are between $400-600????

I don't know, I think about resale value if I ever wanted to part with it, and I often say to myself if I am about to buy something over the top expensive, "Just because I am crazy enough to purchase this doesn't mean that someone else will be!"

Yes, that is probably true, but they did sell within Ebay, because the seller can cancel it and then put it up with a BIN and tell the person who wants to buy it, so they do it right away and the people who had originally bid won't even notice until it's too late. I once ended an auction and put it up with a BIN, but there were no bids on it at all, so I didn't feel it was unfair.

No, they are starting to list them separately. Im seeing some of the ones that I spotted in the lot individually online, by the same seller.

Well, thats a disappointment. This person is going to attract a WHOLE different group of buyers now. Ones who will cherry pick patterns, and not bid on others. SO they are going to make about the same amount of money, with three times as much effort involved.
