What's the point of the red V called, then? A proper term to use when describing how high or low that point is would be useful.

I too, am wondering of the proper definitions for these two jacket details. I often hear of "low gorge" or "high gorge." For some reason, often times I take that to mean the lapel points.

Black.

It only confuses some people because the "V" (red) resembles a gorge, particularly a "v-shaped" glacial tributary valley as it connects to the main "u-shaped" glacial valley. A good example is the Grey Mare's Tail in Moffatdale.

Guilty as charged. I at first got that wrong, and precisely because of the visual analogy you mention.

Black. The height of the red is determined by the "buttoning point" - so it has a high buttoning point, or a low buttoning point.

At Charvet, the shirtmaker, they call the area from the buttoning point up to the neck the V-Zone but it's used more to describe the suit/shirt/tie aesthetic than the buttoning point/placement or the amount of shirt reveal. The term has been around for a while and I recall reading that it's used quite commonly in Japan, for some reason. All in all, that wouldn't be a terrible term I suppose. Oh, that V-Zone is way too high for you, Mr. Shmendrik!

Is the seam not included in the black area? [huh] But funnily, I had prepared two photos and decided to post the one I did because I thought it best illustrated the relationship between the gorge and the notch/peak as it is the lapel location that the term is used to describe.

Here, this should please you. It's the photo that I decided not to use. I actually thought of including more of the seam in the top photo to keep the pedants at bay but I'm not that skilled with Paint and I'm lazy.

Well no, because the V shape of the black lines is a relation but not a cause. the cause is the gorge which in the new photo is red (orange to these color blind eyes)line.

I have absolutely no idea what you are saying. [huh]

Ignore the V shaped black lines. They are not what is called the gorge.
The seam made by the joining of the collar and lapel are the gorge.
The higher or lower the gorge is what creates the higher or lower V.
Hence: The V is the result of the gorge , which is the cause.

Adding my bit

It is true that the line in which the collar meets the lapel is the Gorge.

The high-lighted V-area is usually just referred to as the "V" which is caused from the intersection of the break lines.

The area that was originally circled is the Notch.

another bit of technical gargon...... The Gorge Point is where the gorge line crosses the lapel break line (roll line).

This is totally wrong.

One can pattern a low gorge with a higher V and also do the reverse (high gorge with a low V) it is all a matter of patterning. and what styles currently are and what the customer wants.

in the end, its just math, formulas, and pencil drawing converted into clothing.
