I loved this photo showing your ascots. I go nuts over them, and have a rather substantial collection myself...over 50 at the present time. I know..kind of excessive! <smile> I also share your passion for dressing gowns, too.

This is indeed correct. IMHO, they are different beasts.

The day cravat has a pleated neckband and is short.

The formal Ascot has a thin, unpleated, sized neckband and has longer and wider paddles. It is also tied in a special way. I recently made one, the process can be read here:

Question for Ferragamo

I realize this is an old topic but as I am new here and I thought I would ask a question. What reaction from your coworkers did you get when you first wore an ascot to work? The reason I ask is that I had quite a collection that I wore on weekends but a few years ago decided to start wearing to the office. The reactions I got were positive and I was curious about the ones you may have gotten

Not in the office for me...

I agree. I love cravats at the weekend and in the evenings. I often take my tie off and put a cravat on when I get home from work.

I wouldn't wear one to work though. It just seems too casual to me. Even though no-one else I work with even wears a jacket and tie.

I wear one on dress-down Friday. Everything else I wear on Friday is the same as Mon-Thurs

I get compliments, but they always involve the word 'dapper' - it seems to be some sort of compulsion when people see a cravat.

I have sometime had the same reaction. 'Dapper' is not a word I am fond of generally.

I get that a lot too. It is a bit strange. I don't mind though, dapper is definitely a compliment. It falls better on my ears than "fly" which I have also gotten several times.

I only get positive reactions - like: "Hi pilot, wheres your spitfire parked?" (Usually a male comment)
Or: "You look very dashing/charming/sexy/!" (Allways a female comment)

And if somebody meant any different, I wouldn't give a damn.

(easy to say when you are as old as I am - I know!)

Yes.....one gets to an age when one doesn't give a damn. I don't care now. Wish it hadn't taken so long though. Glad to see younger guys are now getting interested in ascots.

I noticed today that the local Oxfam goes as far as writting 'dapper cravat' on the price tags for all theirs!

If you want to see someone who doesn't visit Oxfam for cravat shopping ..(and the word 'dapper' may or may not apply), check out CNN political commentator, Roland Martin who recently defended his choice of neckwear on a American tv debate.

I have a few and wear them occasionally. I wore them a lot living in Norway where an extra layer around the neck to keep the breeze out always helped. Australian MasterChef judge, Matt Preston's wearing of them has meant that they are back in the public eye for good and for bad. Comments never worry me whatever I wear now (and yes I reckon that does happen the older you get), I think it's all about how you wear something. If you wear it with confidence that usually translates to others.

Was at a party on an ad-agency last night.
Normally adpeople dress more down than up, so I thought I would stand out.
Charcole suite, charcole shirt and maroone cravat with beige dots.
It worked!

(Unfortunately I do not have any pics myself - but a lot was taken, so if one pops up, I'll post it.)

Our office is business casual and so I felt an ascot would look better than the open collar. I do sometimes switch out and wear a necktie and suprisingly, I get more comments from coworkers when I wear a tie rather than an ascot
