Sponge Rollers Rumor

Someone once told me not to ever use sponge rollers on my hair. They told me, while drying, the sponge absorbs all of the moisture in your hair and results in damaged hair. I have a set, and I use them regardless. I really like the results, and I do not have a hard time sleeping with them in.

So, is this damaging my hair? Thanks!

I agree, but then I was thinking "well sponges ARE absorbant" lol

I've never heard of that - but surely whatever the sponge absorbs is likely to be reabsorbed by your hair as it drys.

Can't say I've ever heard that one. Of course, the sponge rollers I have, the pink ones with the bar clip, I wouldn't really call sponge. More like a light foam, and not absorbent. I've had times with them in the past where my hair was still slightly damp after sleeping in them. (grrr.)

The natural moisture in your hair is oil. If sponge rollers were absorbing the oil, the oil would remain in the rollers since oil doesn't evaporate. Has this been the case?

yeah, sounds pretty bunk to me. I did just switch to flexi rods though, and I like them almost as much as sponge rollers.

Your hair loses moisture everytime you shower, the amount depends on how hot the water was from what I understand. Johnson & Johnson have done some research on this, but I can't seem to find it at the moment.

Rollers certainly do absorb hair oils! I'm not sure if that's what accounts for some of the frizz if you don't use end papers (and why end papers work so well). But my hair was one giant oil slick as a teen, so much so that my rollers used to become discoloured after about four to five months of use! It's calmed down now quite a bit, thankfully. Seeing as I've been using foam rollers for close to a decade now, I really don't think it can harm your hair to an observable extent.
