I think it's because they equate these fashions with pop-culture icons like June Cleaver, who was both ladylike and polite.

I know exactly what you mean, but I understand what the magazines are saying. For people like ourselves who appreciate and wear vintage fashion on a regular basis, this seems odd - but you must consider the current context. Most fashion trends today are anything but ladylike. I think these type of vintage-inspired styles - the full, longer skirts, classic makeup with nicely-done red lipstick, gloves - are considered "prim and proper" vs. the typical 2010 fashions of metal-studded stripper heels, skintight barely-there clothing, and raccoon smoky eye.

These are the type of looks one could wear to church, if that makes sense.

Does anyone have the Sweetie Dress from Trashy Diva? I really want one but they can't tell me how long the skirt is (they asked me to call, but without Skype it's not practical at BT call prices!) and I'm dying to know if it's long enough in their size 6 or 8.

It's strange Fleur. I called them for you since I'm in the States. I called the office who referred me to the 800 number who said they'd have the office get back to me with the skirt measurement. [huh] So I guess I'll be expecting an email back from them. I'll let you know if I hear anything back.

I've tried this on in several of their patterns, and I'm a 6 in their sizing. The dress falls slightly above my knees. I'm 5'5", if that helps.

I am on my way there for a visit, so I can measure the skirt from waist to hem, if you'd like.

It is a lovely dress and very comfortable. Though it is rayon and not their normal silk. They've promised me that their Holiday line has a lot of silk in it, and I'm *so* excited.

And just so everyone knows, if you have any questions about Trashy Diva, just let me know. I live in New Orleans and visit their stores about once a week, just because they're my happy place. I know their sizing varies a bit. an example being my size is either a 4, a 6, and sometimes an 8 there. Depending on the fabric of the dress, and the waist to bust ratio, I guess. ::shrug:: So I can pass along any questions when I visit and get an answer fairly quick. And of course, this will just give me more reason to stop by. ;-)

Oh phooey. I hate when that happens...it's like ordering from ModCloth. At times they have really cute vintage-inspired dresses, but sadly super short. I guess that's the modern spin they add to it.

Tara Starlet 1940s Dancing Skirts

I've very excitedly just received delivery of a black dancing skirt from Tara Starlet. I've honestly been looking for a decent black skirt for most of this year, and was getting quite depressed about it.

The length is great, and the fabric is a nice weight for Autumn and Winter, perfect. Only downside is it's dry clean only, but to be honest I handwash 90% of my "dry clean only" clothes, with no adverse effects!

Also wanted to share with you about the sizing - it was my first order with Tara Starlet so I wasn't quite sure whether to go for the 12 (29" waist) or 14 (31"waist) as I'm bang inbetween.

I went for a 14 in the end, which in reality measures 32" at the waist, so it's quite generous, even allowing for tucking in a blouse. Fortunately it looks easy to move the buttons across slightly, so I'm going for that option rather than lose money by exchanging, as I'd have to pay for the return postage on that one, and then postage for the new size. And they're not cheap - £45 plus £5 postage.

Hope this helps anyone considering a dancing skirt purchase...

Oh YAY! They have the Union Jack shirt I've been looking for. I saw it on a pin-up picture and have been salivating over it. The clothes on their site look yummy.

How's the quality? Good, solid workmanship that can stand up to everyday wear?

Workmanship looks good, couple of stray threads around buttonholes and at end of seams, but seams look strong and as I said earlier, the fabric is a really nice weight for Autumn and Winter. Overall I'm pleased, wouldn't hesitate to wear everyday - am yet to find out if it can be handwashed though instead of dry cleaned.

I moved the buttons - doesn't affect it too much, but I'm being realistic that over time I'll probably get bigger rather than smaller!

It was my first order with them, placed the order on the 4th and received it on the 6th. Arrived wrapped in tissue paper, nice touch.

Have you seen the cosy red cape? Oh my!
