Cookie-could you please send me the name of the Optician you bought yours from? And a ball-park price? think they may look OK on my noggin.
Will fill with very dark Grey Rx lenses. Question: "7 Barrel jobs"?? please get back to me?

Yesterday I had an eye exam and had already planned to get a pair of Shuron Ronsir ZYL's, however I was pleasently surprised to find that the optometrist already carried the Ray Ban Clubmasters. I was seriously considering these since they were already in stock and it would be easier to deal with my insurance, however they only had one size. When I requested to get a different size, the girl working there checked the website and said they only came in one size? Is this true? I don't want to pay that much for a pair of frames that they have to alter ( bend) ( the ear pieces were a little short). If not I will gladly call Shuron up and order frames for them. Looking forward to your input.

First off, the temples are designed to be altered to fit you exactly. So don't worry about that. However, go with the Shurons. You'll be happier in the long run. Every piece, lense size, temple, bridge is available in different sizes. They are a breeze to work with. Call them up.

I had them send me 3 sizes to try out. I figured out what I needed and sent them all back. Then my optometrist ordered them from Shuron for me and billed my insurance. Your optometrist should be able to do the same.

Not to mention Shuron is the original and still made in the US. Ray ban is part of a huge multi national conglomerate and has become just a fashion accessory.

Scott, I wear Ronsirs, and have a few pairs of Raybans as well. (The Raybans are standard sunglasses, worn occasionally with contacts; my Ronsirs are prescription lensed). To the best of my knowledge, Raybans come in, I think, two sizes.... that said, I bought all mine used, so they may have changed that more recently. For what it may be worth, an optician once advised me against spending the big money on a pair of Raybans if I was only going to pop out the lenses to fit a prescription set - "the quality of the lenses is what you pay most of the money for with those". [huh] I do feel myself that the Ronsirs are just that little bit more robust, though not enough to be worth worrying about if you happened to fall in with a pair of Raybans for buttons (a used pair of Raybans with good frames would be a cheap way of getting a browline style...). The Ronsirs are available in a wider range of styles - more colours, choice of leg styles (I'm a fan of the curved, cable legs myself - not an option in the Clubmasters), and choice of silver or goldtone metal parts. Dealing direct with Shuron, they cannot be beaten on price.

Another option for the browline style that your optician may carry is Tom Ford - they do a slightly more modern take on the classic style, but still nice.

I'll echo the Shuron love. I got my current Regis frames from them. Based on recommendations from the Lounge here, I got a hold of Tony Rivers, who was kind enough to send me a sampler pack of frames for a small deposit (the price of one pair of frames + shipping). I was allowed to keep them for a bit to try out, see what I liked, and then send back the ones I didn't want. Mr. Rivers was kind, courteous, and enthusiastic to help me find the right pair for me-- salesmanship traits often lacking in any buying medium.

I'll also echo encouraging you to look at Shuron's variety of Browline styles. To look at some old photos you'd think they only came in black and silver, but there were other varieties too-- I've got a certain fondness for the gold/tortoise, myself, and would probably be wearing them if my wife hadn't taken such a shine to the Regis.

Vintage Eyeware

I am getting glasses for the 1st time and in search of a pair of vintage frames like these my friend Troy is wearing in the picture- any suggestions on where I might find some??

Those look to be Shuron Ronsir Zyls - see www.shuron.com Tom Ford also does something in that vein now, though it looks a touch more modern. Some folks also use the frames from a pair of Rayban Clubmasters, though I'd avoid that myself - limited sizing range with those, plus if you buy new, a lot of the premium you pay for Raybans is to do with the quality of the lenses, which you obviously don't get if you pop them out to fit prescription.

Are those browlines? I have a pair of Allyn Scura "Bartons". Not vintage but very well done. Look at the mid-century collection on this page.

Got these from eyeglasses.com - made by our friends across the pond AngloAmerican. They are 55mm to fit my giant head, and come in a wide variety of shades. I got an amber tortoise shell, but they come in black and darker shades.

I just bought a pair of Shuron Rimways from Optometrist Attic. Vick, apparently the owner, was a pleasure to deal with, his site is excellent, and he has a big selection of vintage combinations frames, which your friend appears to be wearing.

Tomorrow I'm picking up my new glasses. They are clear aviator type, which I have found I need when shooting because I was loosing the top of the view over the barrels due to the small view through my old timey wire rims. Anybody tell me when aviators came into general use and if there is any vintage precedent for clear lenses in them?

Vick is in fact the owner and is in fact a swell fellow to deal with. I bought my mother a pair of glasses from him several years ago.

Let us know how the Rimways work out for you. I tried to wear a pair two years ago but they sat funny on my face and kept gouging the side of my nose-- I mean, actual, small lacerations. My opticians, try as they might, just couldn't adjust them to not hurt. I've wondered since if I just happened to get a defective pair or if my face just wasn't meant for that type of frame.

My frames are with the lab now, getting prescription lenses made and fitted, but I wore them for a couple hours with just the demonstrator lenses around the house and found them comfortable. Was it the edges of the lenses or the nose pads that lacerated your nose? The nose pads that came on mine are very soft, clear silicon. The (demonstrator) lenses cleared my nose just fine, even though I went with the narrowest inter-lens gap of 20 mm, but I went with the smallest lenses, which are 44 mm across.

Perhaps smaller lenses or a larger inter-lens gap would solve the nose laceration problem?

I had the 20mm gap, too, which is par for the course; I've comfortably worn glasses with bridges marked 17-21 mm. The lenses were a 50, which, again, is what I usually wear. The nosepads themselves were what was cutting into me, although they were also the soft silicon. There was also an uncomfortable pressure right behind my ears.
