As far as the sex goes, I don't feel it's overdone. This is intended to be adult entertainment, and it does help to give the feel of a motion picture not a television series. I think so far this is the best thing HBO has turned out, the storyline is really getting good and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see bars starting to throw "Boardwalk" parties and such. With the country almost in the 2nd great depression I think more and more people will feel a connection to this time period even though it's a little before. If you ask me I'd say this is some really smart marketing.

Really enjoying it. Nucky's really wanting to give the Irish lass the 5th Amendment at some point (could there be 'love' in the air? but is she 'right' for this Godfather of a Gangster? - all will unfold). The chap who plays Al Capone I really like (for his portrayal) as he has captured the psychotic, unpredictable edge to this monster who is growing and growing (not unlike the psycho gangster in Casino).
I've come to terms with the 'modern' music at the start. Sort of sets the Reservoir Dogs in the 30's theme, sells it to a modern audience that 'might not' be interested in this amazing period of history, and is quickly forgotten once the camera starts rolling...

I haven't been lucky enough to see this yet (I guess, like Deadwood, I'll have to wait for DVD boxed sets to reach the UK). The actor is Stephen Graham, a familiar face in the UK for his portrayal of "hard man" characters (he's believably scary in the movie This is England). He also played Baby Face Nelson in Public Enemies.

They really plugged the Irish song..."I wish I was in Carrickfergus!" Obviously none of those gents had ever been, as they'd realise what a 'dump' it is!! Only nice thing about it is the old Norman Castle overlooking Belfast Lough. Just shows...Ireland is always greener on the other side of the pond!!

Nucky has finally got his nookie too!!! to be sure, to be sure!!!

Yes, he's getting rather typecast, but he does play the psychotic thug role very well. I've been enjoying this series immensely. Especially 'Prohibition Omar'! lol

I'm loving the series. It's growing momentum with each episode. I'll catch the latest one tonight after work. Hasn't young Margaret played an interesting game with Nucky? not sure how compatible the two are with him going into the gangster business, but then again, I have a feeling that 'she' will start wearing the pants when it comes to the business, as she has a cute little "switched on" head, as was proven when she dealt with the Governor at the ball. Will it be a match made in heaven, might be, the way Nucky's life is heading - the ending..."ain't goin to be purdee!!"

From the comments here, it seems I'm really missing out. I don't have HBO so I think I'll wait for the DVDs. No sense in ordering HBO when it will probably get cancelled after its second season due to cost overuns.

The Prohibition Agent whipping himself...(?), I'm just trying to make head-and-tail of this euphamism. Is it because he fancies Margaret (the Irish widow)? Or is he physically 'beating himself up' over some emotion he has? Is it to do with his 'Crusade' to punish those that don't follow the law, so he punishes himself in some Biblical way? Does he blame 'himself' for allowing Margaret (who was trying to help him by pointing out Nucky's drink storage) to be swallowed up into Nucky's Harem?

Can you tell, I've given this a bit of thought!!! and I'm still none-the-wiser!

Someone please correct me if Im wrong, but I believe what he did was called self-flagellation. It was a practice that was started by radicals of the Catholic church just before the Middle Ages. In modern times, it became a way to obtain an altered state of consciousness for the goal of experiencing religious experiences or visions (thank you, Wikipedia, for the concise wording). Van Alden has been portrayed as a devout Catholic. When he turned the picture of his wife face down, and stood up the picture of Schroeder in front of him, this was surely what he had in mind. He is obsessed with her, and this is (one of, so far) his follow-throughs.

The writing is making Van Alden out to be a twisted human being, and, in the style of HBO, this only adds fuel to that fire.

Isn't Jimmy Doherty's character developing nicely. He's definitely the brains as well as the muscle.

Personally, I found it 'very moving' how he took the injured Army Sniper under his wing (he had been facially disfigured during the Great War), brought him back to his 'home' got him a few drinks and set him up with one of the girls. I found that a very emotional piece actually.

Nucky torching the house, seems to have torched many of his childhood demons that continue to haunt him . Nucky is such a tortured soul of a man, I hope Margaret will be good for him. A REALLY enjoyable episode on Sunday!!

Hey Paddy,

Two things:

1. Is there anyway I can see some pics of your Aero Bronco? I know you posted some a while back but they are no longer viewable. I've got one on order in Jerky Seal with mid-brown knits and would love to hear what you think about it. My email is damienweaver@hotmail.com. Sorry, I know this is off-topic but I didn't know how else to get ahold of you.

2. My girlfriend is in this show. We live in Brooklyn. She played a flapper sitting on the lap of some bigwig at Babette's in episode four. Was in the subway at Grand Central the other day. Saw a huge movie poster with her face on it. 'Twas a truly awesome moment.
