White RAF Roll Neck Sweaters

With the onset of winter I broke down and ordered a "RAF" sweater from Silverman's. I had owned one previously from "What Price Glory" and was relatively dissatisfied with the design and fit of the sweater as well as the quality of the wool.

The Silverman's sweater however, is amazing. The fit is perfect. The wool is high quality. The design is excellent. It's comfortable. Highly recommended. Worth the shipping and handling to the States.

I did not grow up with sweaters, being a native Southern Californian. Also, I don't look good in them. But now that I live in cooler climes, sweaters have more utility.

On Archbury's recommendation, I bought a T-neck from WPG. I was surprised that it fit loosely. I've lost weight, but I thought an XL would still be snug. Actually, it's quite comfortable. It could even be tighter. It looks good under my REI jacket. I've felt softer wool, but I don't find it at all uncomfortable. The price was right, and delivery was swift.

How is the feel of the wool?
I'm one of those folks who is very sensitive to coarse wool.

Those Ace Cafe sweaters are fantastic. I bought one for my dad a few years ago (they were only GBP45 at that time, though!). I'd be curious to compare one directly to the Silverman's option (and, for that matter, the one ELC offer; Aero used to I think, but I don't see it on their site any more). I do wodner if one or more of them is made in the same place, and they all look very similar. The one I bought Dad came from the Ace, but at that time they offered them in both this cream colour and a navy blue. Shame they don't still do the latter - it's tremendously practical, and while I'd only be likely to buy one cream one, if they had come in blue also I'd have considered both for myself.

i have an eastman sweater but i found that quite scratchy been looking everywhere for one less so

I'm wearing my WPG right now. I'm a cheap bas... person, and my house has a propane furnace. So I turn it off when I'm not at home. Got back from Seattle today, and the house was a mite chilly. (There was a snow flurry on the way to work, and temps are below normal for the next week.) So I haven't taken the sweater off yet. I wore my RAF boots today, and I've taken them off. Wool sweater and bare feet. Go figure!

In my opinion, this is about as comfortable as wool gets (without it being that newfangled "Smart Wool"). It's very comfortable and wearable.

hi, what an amazing website. I'm new to it. I found it by chance as i am looking to get an raf/submariner roll neck, entered that on the interet and found this website as well as various stockists for these pullovers. As well as silvermans and ace cafe i also found naticalia website in middlesex england, who sell the navy blue wool roll necks as we as the white/ecru ones. Rgds stevie

Jersey, white

The item that is sold as a Submariner's (or even RAF) Roll-neck Sweater for anywhere around 50 GBP is the RN Jersey, White and can be found in small UK surplus stores for 10 - 15 GBP. J. Pick had the contract that most often turns up.

Anyone know how the Silverman and Ace Cafe Sizes run?

Are they in inches? I wear a 50 (American) and am looking at the Silvermans Size 4 or the ACE Cafe Size 54...just want to make sure I am not "crossing" my size references.

Can anyone give their usual jacket size and how either of these fit them?

I am 52 - had to go up one size, since they don't do 52. Ordere a Size 54 from Ace cafe. Fits comfortably. Not way too large and not too narrow either. But I guess it all depends on personal taste and how you like your sweaters.
But if you are 50 a 54 would propably be too much.

I like sweaters a bit big but have lost 45 pounds recently. I usually have to go larger just to get the arm length I like...with a 17.5x36 shirt size, it's a wonder my knuckles don't drag on the ground!

A 50" should be OK then. They have rather long sleeves - and if you don't fold them up, you'll be OK. I think.

so a quick check: if I wear a US 44R I would get a 50 from ace or is it the same as US sizing?

I'm 5'10 180, pretty average arm length etc

If you are asking me, I am no expert on UK/US sizes - why don't you ask Ace Cafe directly, they should know.

I Am wearing a Silverman's White Roll Neck today, it is a very good warm sweater, there is a firm in the UK Called Nauticalia do the White ones and also Navy Blue Roll necks too. Both in 100 % wool. rgds Steve
