I've decided to Sell my Highwayman.... so I thought I would just give you Guys a heads up as well...

I always intended to put pictures of myself wearing this jacket up on this site.. especially after all the help I had from you all in deciding the style and spec of my first order from Aero

Thanks guys... I've just gone veggie and feel a bit odd at the moment about wearing leather..... I quite fancy a Buzz Rickson B15 or some similar ...

With my shaved head I have developed quite an appreciation for this cap at this time of the year.... now I look at it again..I must admit it does not look its best in these pics.....and they wear out their shape pretty fast with continual wear.... I do find it hard to find decent winter hats ....

Any suggestions of any makes to look out for would be gratefully appreciated!!!

I may change my mind about selling the Highwayman yet.... just being veggie makes it a bit hard....and I need the funds If I get a B15 for the rest of winter.... I got quite a nice Alpha one off Ebay quite cheap but unfortunately its a little too much on the snug side in fit.

Too bad it is in England. Shipping and taxes would probably eat me up. Do you have any idea what they woud be? But I am interested. Hate to see a jacket like that go to an outsider; it looks a treat!

And what is the measurement from armpit to armpit, across the chest. First zip the jacket, lay it on a flat surface, pull it tight, let it relax and then take the measurement. I'm not too concerned that you get the seam to seam, but the widest part under the armpits will be better than the seam to seam.

Elnico, I empathize. Back when i went veggie in the early 1980's, I left 2 pairs of almost new Allen-Edmonds in a laundromat for some lucky soul. Nowadays, I happily buy USED fur and leather products, never new. As for your jacket, perhaps one approach is to enjoy the product as the ultimate way to honor the dead animal(s) it's made of. Also, when others invariably ask you why you wear leather when you don't eat meat, the jacket could be the perfect launching pad into a discussion of ethics, and what's changed in your thinking between when you bought it and now. Almost, perhaps, more admirable than ditching all evidence of your personal development, like I did with those awesome shoes. Just a thought!

Hello elnico,

Terrific looking Highwayman you have there...........I'm still a meat eater but I'm trying to come up with a cute rationale that you could use that would thwart any comments about you wearing your jacket, as per "randooch" did but alas, I don't have a clue. What you could do is sell it to me real cheap and then I wouldn't have to justify wearing it as I tear into my medium rare rib eye steak. Because as Peacoat so eloquently stated it would be a shame to perhaps go to a non fellow Lounger!

Elnico: Here is the simple answer from a deep thinker (me). The animal (cow, horse, goat or whatever) is killed for the meat under its hide, not for the hide itself. That is, the animal is slaughtered for food. The hide is merely a by product, an afterthought, as it were. The horse who furnished the hide for your jacket didn't die to give you that jacket; he died to give someone a meal. If the hide wasn't used for jackets, it would be wasted, and a big part of the horse who was slaughtered for food, would be wasted as well. So you are doing the horse a favor by using his hide so that no part of him is wasted. The more HH jackets you buy, the more horses you are helping.

With logic like that, you best be out tomorrow buying more HH jackets.

Hi... saw your ad on ebay before I saw it here..... lovely jacket...you mentioned a B15....have a look on aeros website sale section.... they have a couple B15's on sale in dark green for an absolute bargain price of £125...plus postage .... i think they have a 42 an 44....

I think shipping an "used item" such as a jacket, shouldn't be charged by customs. You might want to check that out.

On Aero's website they state this: US Government restrictions dictate that the slaughter of equine for hides was not permitted and as such the sourcing of hides must be from animals that have died from natural causes. This makes horsehide very scarce and as a consequence rare, which makes for an expensive raw material. After expensive research, Aero managed to source the only tannery based in the States still capable of producing this unique hide to the original specifications, although today quality hides suitable for this type of tanning are still very scarce and so availability is very limited due to the fact that all our chrome tanned leather is sourced from "natural death" horses with no slaughter involved.

Still any problems being a veggie and wearing your Highwayman?

Exactly what I just discovered from andy richards' posted classified:

About the leather which is used: The horsehide used for this jacket is veg-tanned in Chicago Ill, USA. All horsehide leather used by Aero Leather comes from animals which had a natural death.

Knowing that it wasn't a bi-product of dog-food production, I'd feel fine sporting this jacket. So, as Rudie asked,

won't mistreatment lead to poorer quality leather? If the animal is malnourished or abused to death, I would imagine this would be borne out in the quality of their hide

I think the animals whose hide makes that jacket are already dead. Wear the jacket so the hides are well used.
It looks good on you and will last long enough to prevent you from getting a lot of
made-in-China-and-soon-to-be-discarded mass market jackets over the years.

I'm always amused by the way those who are opposed to leather goods have no problem with the human suffering
and environmental degradation inherent in the growing, weaving, shipping, and assembly of most cotton and synthetic
fabric clothes. Even many of the clothes that claim they are organic/fair trade/etc.

And how they never seem to tumble to the fact that my fedoras are made from animal fur.
