...I know - it was probably more than $1 - I have no idea how high they would've gone. But I was still 2nd.

I too watch the 7 1/2, especially the Long Ovals & rare Xtra Long Ovals. I've got some vintage ones that need little to no stretching.
I definitely watch the 7 3/4 vintage ones but they bring in another set of bidders & bucks.
I always say they were willing to pay more than me at that specific time for that specific item!!!!

Just "won" this last night. My first "vintage" hat. Did I pay too much? I don't know, but I do know it is the most magnificent looking hat I have ever seen.

Can't wait for it to show up!

You paid what you had to to get it. And if you didn't pay that money, someone else would have. To me, that's the definition of the going price. If you wait around only for steals, you may miss out on a lot of hats appealing to you that you might have bought at the going price.

Congrats on a fine first vintage lid. You did well with the hat AND the price. I think many here were watching the hat, me included, despite it being nowhere near our sizes. Be thankful you are not a melonhead!

The same seller has recently sold a slew of very nice lids, to include a Knox Foxhound, Stetson Flagship, and Lee Cav Edge, all in 7 1/4, and all for very respectable but fair prices, in my estimation.

The quality of your hat is evident from the photos alone, and I imagine it would have gone higher were it not for the moth nibbles.

Please post some better pics when you receive the hat.

No, I don't think I paid too much for it. I think I did alright given how nicely shaped and proportioned the hat is. Just about perfect. ;)

It MAY end up slightly too big for me (sometimes 7 1/8 fits, sometimes 7 1/4 fits, and sometimes neither fit!), but much better too big than too small.

I lost both of these by $1 last night-
Champ
Beat Up Whippet
I know - it was probably more than $1 - I have no idea how high they would've gone. But I was still 2nd.

Bummer to lose out on the Champ. I was watching it as well. Seemed like a good buy. Perhaps the discrepancy between the hat's raw edge and the sweatband designation dissuaded some potential bidders?

I am somewhat surprised by the price achieved by the Whippet given that it will probably require at least a block and clean, but such is the demand for iconic hats in the larger sizes, I suppose.

Just won a Stetson 7x Clear Beaver, it's technically a touch too small but hopefully once I get it in the stretcher it'll work!

Not yet hopefully today. Where did you see various smells it is not in the listing.

Jeff

I asked the seller about the its condition. He replied, "No moth bites but the hat has been in a home with various smells in the air. It isn't new, so I can't promise you it will smell like a new car. However, I will make sure it has been aired out and have people test it with their noses before I mail it."

As such, I limited my maximum bid in case I needed to send it for professional cleaning. Anyway, I do hope it is not as bad as it sounded.

My wife smokes so if it has a smoke smell I won't notice. I live only 5 miles from a full service hat shop I figured cleaning and blocking into my bids so hopefully it will come out ok.
