Flags of Our Fathers
I am not sure if we have discussed this but is anyone interested or excited to see the film? Based on the book by J. Bradley, whose father is one of the men immortalized in the photo of the raising of the American Flag on Iwo Jima. The book details the lives of the flagraisers and their subsequent lives. The battle for Iwo Jima was a vicious and bloody part of the Pacific campaign.
Clint Eastwood is at the directors helm for this movie. I enjoy his films and am hoping he doesn't try to whitewash the qualities of the enemy in the Pacific that make war hell.

I read that there are two movies being made, directed by Eastwood, one from the American forces point of view (which comes out in October), and one from the Japanese forces point of view (which comes out in December), called Red Sun, Black Sand. I'm looking forward to both coming out - if he's taking the time to dedicate an entire movie to the Japanese experience of that battle, you can be pretty sure he won't whitewash either side. Besides, Eastwood doesn't seem to avoid squeamishness in his movies, I can't imagine he'd start now.

Isn't Spielberg doing a Pacific Campaign movie and/or miniseries to complement Saving Private Ryan/Band of Brothers?

Yep, I heard about it too. I wasn't sure if I should add the info in this thread or start another one. [huh]
I have high hopes for both films. I agree Eastwood tends to not avoid squeamishness. The thing that gives me pause is the fact that Paul Haggis is a co-writer on both films. Because I do not like some of the stuff he was written (Crash, Million Dollar Baby) I worry a bit about the tone of the films.

I liked this book and I did some research about the movie about 6 months ago and found pictures from a scene shot on location here in Chicago at Wrigley Field. It looked good seeing people dressed up at the ballpark again.

Yes, the book is outstanding, honest...and terribly hard. If Clint does his work as he knows to do it, we will see an extraordinary war film.

Release Date

I just read somewhere that the official release date is October 20, 2006. Hopefully the trailer will start popping up soon.

Japanese Trailer

Looks like the trailer for the Japanese version of the film has been released. Looks great. From what I've read, the American version trailer won't be out until September. Anyone know if the other movie is still entitled Red Sun, Black Sand? I've now seen it referred to as Letters from Iwo Jima.

Just a bump‚Ä¶
Flags of our Fathers opens October 20th. I am looking forward to seeing this film. My only reservation is in regard to the screenwriters and how they interpret Bradley's well written book. William Broyles Jr. and Paul Haggis have written some real stinkers! Among them are Planet of the Apes, Jarhead, Unfaithful, Million Dollar Baby, and Crash.
If you have not read James Bradley's book you really should. It is a great read. You can get is used from Amazon for four bucks so no excuses, get to readin' before the movie opens.

Special effects

I've seen the previews, it looks great, Computer graphics, special effects are awesome, I can hardly wait, but in a opinion wise would some of you prefer live action to special effects like computer graphics?

I don't think there's really any choice these days. The time is long gone when you could get a Marine Corps Reserve fighter squadron still equipped with Grumman Hellcats to spend part of their training time making strafing runs over the boondocks at Camp Pendleton for a camera crew. The original gear is either gone or in museums or private collections, logistics and insurance regulations prevent some of the stunts that used to be performed regularly just a few years ago and, frankly, computers can do it a lot more safely and inexpensively.

The good news is that each film seems to be a quantum leap in technology and skill level over the last one, so the effects are getting better.

First and foremost is a good story. Without a solid foundation most films are hollow.
I do prefer live action effects and stunts to computer generated ones. The former appears better on screen while I understand the latter is cheaper.

I agree completely with you about the story being everything. I also prefer live effects, but in addition to what I wrote earlier, they also needed computer work to help recreate Iwo Jima itself, since the Japanese government wouldn't allow them to shoot the beach landings on the actual island. So we have a beach in Iceland with a digital Mount Suribachi added in postproduction standing in for Iwo Jima. It couldn't have been done any other way.

Absolutely! There are particular locations, scenery, etc. that are not feasibly done without the help of computers. We should all appreciate the benefit of technology.

You mentioned an Iceland location. I saw a photo of Eastwood on location in Chicago while filming Flags.
Do you know what sequences were filmed there?
