If I remember well, wire records were created and produced by Webster Co, from Chicago, around 1940... Charlie Parker recorded a few things in one of these. And had a good sound, indeed!
The reel-to-reel was a German developement.
Never heard a 8-track working... And saw the a recorder only once (a big, weird thing with LP, reel-to-reel, cassete and radio). So I stay with the ol' reel to reel with its 2 tracks.

I have a Webster wire recorder -- it's not the most convenient format to work with, but it does work. They were being manufactured for military use during the war, but weren't sold to the public until the postwar era.
The BBC were using a reel-to-reel tape system before the war, called the "Blattnerphone," which used three-foot-diameter reels of solid steel tape operating at high speed -- if the tape broke, you could easily behead a technician, so it was never sold for home use. But it was being used for broadcasting even before the Germans got their Magnetophon working -- practically all the programs on the Empire Service were played from Blattnerphone recordings.

I will get one of these Websters... It's not all uncommon here the model 80.
Certainly it is not very practical... Specially when you would want to "edit" the recordings, as with the reel-to-reel tape. But always a pleasure to see a Webster working (I have two turntables made by Webster, with that characteristic color. And are the very best I ever saw! One of them, from late 40s, just asked me two drops of oil to starting working again).
