Petticoats and Crinolines.

The slips that Drappa posted are beautiful, but won't give you any lift at all. I always wear slips, but in my book that's not the same thing as a crinoline. I own one huge chiffon crinoline and love it (profile pic)!! It's soft and swishy and doesn't ever go flat, even after sitting through dinner. I'm only 5'0" and don't feel overwhelmed at all. Like angeljenny said, it accentuates a smaller waist. We discussed height issues in the capri thread, and again I think the length is the important thing to consider. My crinoline hits just below my knees. Much longer and you'll look like a little girl playing dress-up. So Tishkaminx, wear those beauties if you want. Sure you'll attract attention, so perhaps they aren't something you can wear everywhere. But they really make you feel like a woman!

I've been wanting a crinoline, but I never realized they were so expensive. I wonder if it would be hard to make one. . .

I got mine from Secrets In Lace, and I really love it. It's great under lighter 50's reproduction dresses as well as more heavy vintage dresses.

Thanks for the advice Bo Peep- I think I have been wearing my skirts at mid-calf. I can't wear knee length as it cut's my legs in half and shortens them but just below might work best.

Kiri, I'm sure you could make one, but I'm not sure I'd like to sew the 300 yds of chiffon needed to give it enough body. lol They are expensive but watch ebay/etsy. Anything $35 and under is worth it!

My Mum sewed my crinoline for my dance recitals- she didn't complain too much so i'm assuming it wasn't too harsh a task to make it.[huh]

I want a big fluffy petticoat! Not sure I would be able to stop myself swishing it about though - they look so feminine.

I have picked up all my crinolines at estate sales I notice the vintage ones are stiffer but not as full as the newer ones I have seen.

I am at the end in the red with one of my crinolines on.

What lovely crinolines you ladies have! I agree, a good one is practically a necessity if you have any of those wonderful New Look silhouette dresses.

ah ladies i could really use some help in finding a petticoat that is about 21 inches long. the websites i have looked all say about 25 inches,or is there a way i can maybe shorten the petticoat without ruining the bottom?

Beth - my chiffon crinoline seems fairly sturdy. I have yet to catch or snag it on anything. Netting is another story, however.

lapuppet - Ironically mine was 21" and I lengthened it to 25". lol It's an easy adjustment to take the crinoline up (or down) at the waistline. Most have 5-6" of ungathered skirt at the waistband. Secrets in Lace offers a style in chiffon that is 21-23" long depending on size. http://www.secretsinlace.com/product/165/Crinolines_and_Pettycoats btw, I adore the pink one!!

If you search for square dance petticoats they often come in shorter lengths. I have a shorter one from Ebay that I got from someone who stopped dancing and was selling off all their attire.
