Looks like they used clippers with a guard set on the same level all the way up. So your hair is not "shingled" at all. And as you said, they went up too high and "underneath". This is more of a skater cut than a bob. I don't mean to sound nasty, it's just that as a hairdresser I can't see anyone doing this these days. You have the perfect hairline for it too!
As it grows out, I hope you can find someone to use thinning shears and just move up from the bottom in a barber fashion, thinning out that last inch to two inches of your hairline. Hope that makes since! And gradually softening the "weight line" as well. In a few months it will be super cute!!

I have those Nicky Clarke ones too and was disappointed with them at first, but I think it is just that they take absolutely ages to heat up. I usually plug them in and then go off and do something else for half an hour before attempting to use them. They're not much good if you're in a hurry!

I did it similar to the girl in this video, the top of the front going forward (as usual) followed by 3 more behind it down to the nape going backward, and two on each side going down. I think it was also the simplest I've ever done.

I tried something new today, the Tikki Lounge-do from Vintage Hairstyling. It got frizzier than I like and I curled my hair with a curling iron, having blissfullt forgotten that I hate doing that, but I will definitely try it again. I'ml rather pleased and I suddenly look a lot like my grandmother- she had a very similar hair-do in the mid-forties.
Not the best of picture, I'm afraid, I didn't remember to take a photo until it had got a bit too dark.

I now know the shingle bob only involves shaving the nape of the neck, not halfway up the head like my stylist mistakenly thought. My hair has grown from that, and here's what it looks like now:
I want to have the hair off the nape of my neck, (it looks odd being longer in the back) thus having a shingle bob. I am in the process of growing out the front however, and eventually the whole thing. Here is a picture of what I would like my hair to look like:
Anyone who has advice on how to go about the particular cut pictured, and if it could indeed be done with my hair the way it is now, please please tell, as I am lost. Thank you.

If you let the sides grow to match the length of the back and then have the back GENTLY shaped, I think it will be close to the picture. It looks like a very blunt cut except for the nape. I'd bring the pic to the stylist so it's clear that this is what you want for the finished hairdo. You may have to have it trimmed for a while until it grows in. Be careful to mention that you don't want her cowlick!
Tell your stylist to do scissor over comb in barber fashion. Moving from the nape up, bringing the comb out a bit further as they move up the back of the head.
It can also be cut with a straight razor- in reverse- starting at the top and sliding the razor in more towards the head as they move down.
For now tell them to blend in the weight line if they can and just trim and thin the neckline. Hope that helps! Wish I could do it for you!

Can I ask you ladies for some advice on setting products please? For curling I vary between hot sticks (bendy rollers), and those mushroom ones (heated ones that are more like pin curls, and give a bigger curl), and I get a reasonable curl, but it never lasts, it always falls out after a couple of hours, and never really lasts until the next day. I usually use mousse, or sometimes a spray, I think it's Schwarzkopf Heat Protection Styling Spray or something. So can someone recommend something better (that I can get in the UK cheaply)? My other problem is getting nicely defined soft curls - once I've brushed enough to get rid of 'clown hair' the curls have lost their definition, OR I brush less and am left with residue from the styling product and it's not soft. Am I just setting the curlers wrong, or is this a problem with heated rollers? I know I'm rambling a bit, but can anyone give me some advice?

Curls created by heat only last one day for me, no matter what. If I wet set the curls keep very well and I don't use anything more than water when I set it. So I suspect the quick fix with heat is the culprit.

I suspected as much... although I rarely have the energy in the evenings to do my hair in an overnighter, which is why I go for a heated curl for the weekend when I have more time. And that will be why my fingerwaves lasted so nicely. Perhaps I just need to get more organised in the evenings and think like a proper vintage girl
