Buy a hat for someone who is clueless.

My dad wanted me to go to my hat shop and buy him a hat. I asked him what size he said, he said he didn't know, but "smaller than you" he added.

I'm a 7 3/4, so what would be a bit smaller than that, but still fairly large?

I hate buying hats for clueless folks.

The odds of picking out a properly sized hat based on him having a smaller head than you is no very good. Why not have him measure his head with a fabric tape, or if he lives near you just take him to the hat shop.

Hi

Measure his head, you can look up sizes in inches, that way you KNOW his size. You also need to work out if he is a wide oval or long oval. Hopefully, he's a regular oval. If your Dad is at all mobile, I'd try and take him somewhere, at least lids where they have sized ball caps to try on.

Chances are that without better information this isn't going to come out well. A small difference (half an inch, say) in head circumference makes a big difference in fit. And rare (if not nonexistent) is the person who can tell such things just by looking. "Smaller than you" is likelier accurate than not, as relatively few people have a hat size so large, but there's a BIG difference in size (and wearability) between a 7 5/8 and a 7 1/8.

As others have said, try to get a measurement of his head's circumference. Measure at the place his hat's head opening should be, a tad above the tops of the ears. Take that measurement in inches and divide it by pi (3.14, etc.) to get his hat size.

One of my fondest recent memories is taking my dad to a hat store and buying him a hat. Don't miss a great opportunity. Take him to a hat store... then you will find out what his size is.
