When a neighbor let me borrow his pith helmet I couldn't help it....I had to make another quirky self-portrait. I don't see myself wearing this in public, though.

I wore a zulu pith like that out for a hike and a russian middle aged woman
asked if I was a firefighter [huh] Not sure how that relates to a firefighter?
and another time I brought one to Mexico, I was walking at night and a
man said "ahh a hunter" in a sarcastic voice joking way, So If you don't care
about others opinions then I'd wear it outside! :D

Remember in the movies where they say, "Stay close to the camp"...?

This shot is taken only seconds before the Creature from the Black Lagoon attacks and shreds the photographer who never listens.

I suspect the generic shape reminded her of a firefighter's helmet. Personally I think they have more in common, shape-wise, with the traditional English "Bobby" helmet. I much prefer the round brim style, myself.... mostly aesthics, but it does seem to me to offer slightly better protection from the sun. Not sure I can ever imagine myself wearing one outside of hiking or whatever; I'd prefer straw or my safari-ised Akubra Riverina in town.

Here's where I purchased my Zulu type Pith from. Best prices I could find for modern reproductions.

Perfect timing. My 11 year old nephew wants one as a fishing hat (I just spoiled and indulge him; I don't question anything zany and wild he wants to do as long as it's not illegal or injurious to him or anyone in the vicinity).

Oh goodie, oh goodie - You no longer have to call me a cab, the post office will deliver to me here!
(Translation - I just rolled over to 3000 posts and went from "Call me a cab" to "My mail is forwarded here" in my descriptor).

Wow...and I thought that I was the only person with a strange draw to the pith. It's nice to know that there are one or two other strange people like myself out there! When I've worked out how to upload an image...I'll post a picture!

I've been wearing a surplus military sun helmet for years. I found it new in a surplus store, and it's become my favorite hot weather hat. On our backcountry expeditions it has pretty much become my trademark. This was taken in 2005 on a ridgetop in the mountains of southeastern Oregon.
