Curse of the Awesome Hat Shop

Last Saturday, the wife and I went to buy some hat sizing strips to deal with some slightly loose shoes she just bought. We went to Salmagundi in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston because we knew they had some. We figured that while we were there we'd just look around. We should be safe, right? We couldn't afford anything with the wife out of work, so what could it hurt? Well, the wife spotted a gorgeous summer hat up on the wall:

I took it down and she put it on; it was perfect! She never buys anything for herself but she has a birthday this week and a very promising job interview as well. I talked her into getting it (I had to invoke a husband's privilege), and as we were about to pay, I asked the proprietor, Jessen, about 8 panel linen caps. He pulled one out from a display (he remembered my size from all the other times I didn't mean to buy a hat :eusa_doh:), I tried it on and it was just what I was looking for. When I took it off, I saw that I left a bunch of little hairs in it, having just gotten my hair cut. Well, I just had to buy it then! What is it about hat shops? I can't go into that place without walking out with a new hat or two. To make it even worse, he told me they now have full cleaning and blocking services. Suddenly, I'm thinking about different ribbons, changing some C-crowns to center creases and I'm sure I'll think of something else. It's a great shop, owned and run by folks who love what they do.

My wife HATES to see me go near anything resembling a hat shop, as I am much the same way. I can't even rationally explain it, I am just drawn to hats. Before I knew better, I nearly commissioned a custom made beaver for the princely sum of $800. She had to drag me out of the place, reminding me that she was unemployed at the time, as well as the fact that she controlled half of the money and all of the "amour" in our house. Not quite that bad, but close!! In short, I feel your pain!!

With as little money as I make I hate to say it but I'm so glad I don't live anywhere near a decent hat shop! My money would barely make it into my account before being siphoned out as quickly as it goes in!

I don't seem to suffer from this curse. Just this past February, during FedoraFest3, I somehow turned down a massive discount--offered to me by Joe Peters of Peters Bros.--on a beautiful black Borsa Allesandria. I couldn't even bring myself to buy something at the Hatco Outlet Store!

Of course that may not count. I turned all those deals down to save up some money for a custom hat :eusa_doh: :p.

There is not a single hat store of repute that carries any known brand in the country I'm currently in. I can't say how glad I am to be leaving soon. Seriously, at least Australia has Akubras.

Yeah, that might not count, LOL! The spooky thing is: they now do cleaning and blocking, so now there are all those thrift store and eBay fix-er-up-ers I used to pass on.

No hat shops that I know of around here, other than western. Though I did buy a Stetson Gun Club. The next time I visit my mother, I plan on hitting Henry the Hatter in Detroit. My wife won't be with me, I'll deal with that later.

I live right between two of them. Hats Plus in Chicago and Henry the Hatter in Detroit. Hats plus is about 100 miles and Henry is about 200. Haven't been to either one even though I have patronized both. As an internet merchant, I'm also an internet shopper.
