What is your favorite red lipstick brand/shade?

Just an fyi. CVS has thier L'oreal colour riche lipstick on sale for $5 and if you spend $10 on those sale marked items you get $3 ecb(extra care bucks good at CVS) back. If you scan your CVS card you should get the spend $10 on beauty products and get $3 dollars off your purchase. Soooo lol It's like getting 2 L'oreal lipsticks for $4 dollars.

I think Besame have a sample pack of their reds for sale again! For a while it didn't look like they had samples, but now they do for those.

. Thats one of my favorite dresses, got it off etsy a while back and it was so much nicer than expected! Love it when that happens! Its a lovely rayon jersey fabric (which requires no ironing yay!).

Does anyone intentionally layer multiple lipsticks to get just the right shade or correct something that doesn't look the way you thought it would once on? Yesterday I put on some of Rimmel's Moisture Renew lipstick in Rouge, then decided it wasn't quite what I wanted, so I swiped on some of Revlon's Colorburst lipstick in Ruby, and the effect was a really nice deep bluey-red (kind of like the Maybelline Color Sensational Red Revival). It felt good on, and lasted without touch-ups even through two Polynesian drinks.

Not-red lipstick I should avoid at all costs: Cover Girl Outlast in euphoria. It looked like a nice plummy color. When I put it on: purple. Muppet-flesh purple. Argh. I like purple, but not on my lips. Maybe when I'm a crazy old lady, but not now.

I heard that Marylin Monroe would use several shades of red lipstick on her lips at one time to give it a certain effect, can't say I've tried it myself though

I recently started using NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams in Monte Carlo (a deep blue red) and Amsterdam (a corally tomato red). They go on like a gloss, with a doe foot applicator, and dry to a nice matte finish. The formula is quite moisturizing for a matte lipstick and because it has to set, I can go in with a q-tip to correct any errors before it dries. I LOVE IT!

I almost always layer my reds to get a cutom shade

For years I've used lipliner brand Prestige in 05 True Red, which u can find in any Rite Aid, Walgreens, CVS etc. Currently the lipstick I use is Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in 740 Certainly Red. Before that I used another red from the Revlon Matte collection, but I can't seen to find it anymore

and theres always Mac Ruby Woo/Russian Red

I've actually got a lipstick that I got at a store that sells both unsold store pallets (unsold merch from Target, Walmart, etc.) and consignment. I can't seem to find the brand anywhere online, but it comes in a clear tube and has nothing but "T E N" written on the side of it. It's somewhat matte brick color called "chili", I wish I had photos. Just love it!

Beautimous, I love that!! I once had a brick colored lipstick and I loved it too! It was probably the best color I've ever had! Sadly I didn't remember the name or brand

so I'm still on the hunt for a perfect brick!

Thank you for your awesome compliment! No it's not matte at all. I usually line my lips, then fill in with lipstick an apply all over with the lipliner again, I believe that last lip liner coat is what reduces the shine, giving it a matte look. Oh and for easy smooth application, I put lip balm about 30 min before I apply, then reapply again 15 minutes later and let it sink in and absorb. When I apply, the lip liner glides on smoothly and it almost seems like the color is richer in a way! I posted yesterday a pic of the lip products I use to achieve this

How matte is too matte? According to Besame's site, original lippies weren't matte, despite the general opinion that vintage reds should be worn as such. Also, if you really study lipstick as you watch old movies, it's usually somewhat creamy in appearance. I'm IN LOVE with MAC Ruby Woo, but it id sooo incredibly matte that it's totally dry. On the other hand, I'm not sure if Besame Red looks too moist... Thoughts?

Also, I bought Loreal's Infallible LeRouge today in Ravishing Red (pretty, but slightly sparkly) and Refined Ruby (overall gorgeous, IMO). Has anyone else tried these yet?

Creamy lipsticks go on better, but tend to bleed without liner. Matte textured lipstick is really a modern invention and is, as you say, extremely drying. But Besame's website, and your study of classic actresses, are more accurate.

My theory is that modern views of vintage make-up are slightly askew, because they contrast with today's standards of application. Dita Von Teese described it pretty perfectly in Burlesque and the Art of the Teese:

"For great '40s makeup, forget what all the current fashion and beauty magazines tell you is the 'right' way to wear your red lips. They'll tell you not to use a liner, as it's 'too harsh,' or to smudge it to make it less perfect. But when is the last time you saw a picture of Hedy Lamarr with smudged red lips? And when did you see an Elvgren or DeVorss pinup with anything less than a perfectly drawn pout?"

It all comes down to the texture of lipstick you prefer. My all-time favourite is Benefit's Flirt Alert, which is so moist its almost oily.

Exactly - I love Rubywoo but it's too drying for me unless i add some balm. I think C-Dot is spot on. It's down to what lipstick finish you prefer. My lips are naturally rather dry and no amount of exfoliating and applying balm is going to change that. I use Estee Lauder Classic Red as my default colour, as it has a satin finish and is a glorious true red on me.

I actually wish i had a perfect lip-line so i could just apply lipstick with my finger or straight from the tube with no liner but alas that isn't the case. My mother always said if you were going to wear darker lipsticks like red, you should make the application as flawless and perfect as possible. So i go with that.
