He remembers when $1 was real money. You could have a nice meal at a diner for less than that. Heck, I'm 45 and can remember when a Coke from a machine was 15 cents. Nowadays, it's a buck, and frequently more.

I can remember when it was important to teach your son "the value of a dollar." Do they even do that any more? I don't have kids, so I don't know.

Well, I've wanted to but, never was around many sleeping cows... I saw the movie "Tommy Boy" and they were going to do it... till he slipped in the mud and got all dirty. I thought it would be pretty funny to see a sleeping cow just fall over... hahahahahaha... yeah, sounds mean but, thoes guys are big and it don't hurt them really.

As a verteran of the service industry who knows what it's like to get stiffed by deadsbeats despite busting your ass to make 'em happy, I ALWAYS tip. 20% minimum. Great service will get 30%+ plus out of me. New Yorkers in general follow this rule. Out-of-towners and those from abroad are usually ignorant of this or are just plain cheapskates, but they are "educated" quickly enough.

Now I thought a 'deadbeat' was someone who didn't pay their bill. A cheapskate was a bad tipper? [huh]

I tip all the time.

Ive never had much money but Ive worked a server gig (HALF min. wadge plus tip) and its a HARD gig. Most people are mean, thats any type of retail job, so those nice people, tip or not, always made my day sweeter.

What sucks is that businesses pay such a low wadge so that they expect their customers will pick up the slack for overpriced food/ drink/ etc. and pay a precentage accordingly. The recent forced gratutity of larger parties is evident in that.

IT talke a lot for me not to tip nice, cause Ive done it. Still, seeing tip jars at dry cleaning places, and Subway is a bit over the top. I ignore those, and leave cash only in situations where I am waitied on longer than 30 seconds.

I appreciate kind and courteous service. So when someone does a great job, I tip accordingly. But one thing I cannot stand is a person who is pushy about tips. Last night I went out to my local restaurant and the hostess/coat check girl took my jacket. When I went to pick it up later, she handed me the coat with one hand and pushed her tip jar towards me with the other.

She probably figured that since you're Lana (as in Lana Turner) and you look just like Rita Hayworth, you must be rolling in dough.

I've never worked in the tipped service industry but I know a few people who did, and that really made me appreciate the hard work they do and why they should be tipped. One girl I knew who was a barmaid and was very, very good to the customers. One day there was some piker at the bar for over an hour, and he and his friend ran up something like a $100 tab, reached into his pocket and just left a handful of change. She called back and told him that he forgot his change for the meter.lol She'd rather not take the money than be insulted.

I have to say that New Yorkers and New Englanders are about the best tippers I've ever saw. About ten years ago I was selling cars and a New Yorker tipped me $50 for "making his wife happy by selling her the car". In fact I noticed that in Florida, the supermarkets place signs telling customer's not to tip the courtesy clerks for taking out the groceries. I always found that type of company policy insulting. When I bought my truck I tipped the salesman $50 and told him go buy lunch; he said; "wow, I never go tipped before, that's a pretty expensive lunch."lol Then I told him; "don't tell your boss" and he said; "hell, no, He'll never find out." lol

In regards to the 83 year old man complaining about a buck tip, you should have told him to mind his own darn business . I'd like to see him get out there and wait tables. My friends Dad grew up in the Depression, fought in Korea and his father was an immigrant who couldn't stand FDR. He always told me and my friend two things when we were growing up; 1. spend one day's wages on a pair of shoes. 2. always tip good because the waitstaff works hard and doesn't get paid well. So there was no excuse for that old man to complain, he probably has money buried in coffee cans in the back yard, aiming to be the richest man in the graveyard when he dies. He must be a native to San Francisco Bay Area, as one myself, I can say the people out here are the worst tippers, but they love paying taxes to government.:rage: Excluding me of course.

Hey, sometimes they leave a quarter on the counter (not kidding!) Local San Franciscans usually don't tip and they like to complain about how everything costs too much. Tourists are (mostly) nicer...

I'm beginning to think this is the San Francisco/San Franciscan bashing forum. Every other thread someone has something insulting to say. Does anyone have anything nice to say about The City by the Bay?? Sheesh!
