There are a great deal of hats that I have fallen in love with here. There is one member that I might borrow his style, as it would suit me. Now, the bows have my head spinning. I dont know what in the world I am going to do pattern wise. I am going to go Black/Black and Granite/Black but dont know what type of bow to go with or any accent colors.

Art's a wizard with the ribbons and accent colors. I always leave it up to him and I've never been dissapointed.

Thoughts:

Black is very bold and formal..I suggest a ribbon edge on the brim. Due to it's formality I would opt for something that pops like a velour or his silk finish. there is a great shot on this site of a guy with two silk finish hats from Art one is light color and the other was black or charcoal I think; 1920's style- really great dimensions.

In my opinion I think dark color hats tend to handle smaller brim sizes better than light color hats...or rather larger the brim- the lighter the color you can get away with. Go through this site and see what you like- there is also a thread on black hats somewhere here.

..ok just searched the end of the net and found the link (editing this post)

ENJOY!!!

While I dont have a hat to post, I do have a semi story.

I have always been the "odd guy" I wear newsboy hats, I shave with a straight razor, and have worn fedoras of various types that have never fit me correctly. I have a big noggin and usually fedoras tend to fit a bit tight and leave an imprint on my forehead. They also tend to mess up my hair and I usually end up pushing the middle part out with my head when I wear them. I am a bigger guy, so wearing vintage clothes is a no go, so I usually wear my fedoras with jeans/button shirt and some black shoes.

So about two days ago, I decided to have Art make a hat for me. I figured he could help me out with a few of my issues, in which he assured me he could. I should have my mold by this Saturday.

It may be bland, but I think im going to go with a black hat for my first hat, and in all honesty, I may order a granite right off the bat. Im still not sure what type of hat I would like. I have a Stetson Temple, and a Dobbs Dutton. Both are great hats (that dont fit right). Would it be wrong of me to have Art make two identical hats in different colors? I am thinking of leaving the black without a ribbon edge, and having the granite with the ribbon edge. What to do, what to do. I am going to provide him, and maybe you all with some pictures so you can see what type of brim would suit me. I prefer the smaller Temple/Dutton size. I have another that is just way to broad of a brim. I do plan on going with a teardrop shape though.

Ill keep you all updated.

Isaac, you'll love the workmanship on your Art Fawcett creation. I've gone fairly conservative with my choices, too, and he does a great job with those, just as he is an artist of creative and more colorful ribbons for others. Take a close look at the steel felt--I wanted dark but wasn't willing to go for black, and steel worked out perfectly. You can sort of see it in my avatar, although small. Great color that can be worn with a variety of clothing, from black to grey to navy and blues.

Ok guys. I'm going with the one VS instead of the two Akubras.
Very smart choice. Love my Akubras, but Art's fedoras are in a whole different class.

I do want a light color as this will be a summer hat. Most likely will be an artlite. However, I really like how the full liners look as opposed to the small liner patches of the lite hats I've seen in this thread. Would it be totally counter productive to get an artlite with a full liner?

My artlite is blue smoke with a darker grey ribbon and brim...and it's fully lined. Love it and find it just fine during much of California's coastal summer. When it's not, it means that it's time to switch to my Art-blocked panama. But I do like the look of that ivory felt...Good luck!

Nice hat MD!

Hey guys, if I were to order a hat from Art today, I'd just have to go with the Ivory felt. Just love that!

Gotta agree...I've been lusting after this one:

Edit: looks like the link only directs you to Art's custom page. See the "South Beach" fedora, #5 from the top.

Edit 2: Here's what I was referring to (must be rusty this morning!):

By the way OG, I meant to ask earlier, ...what color is that reconditioned VS?

Cliff

Supposed to be Natural but when I match my felt sample up next to it, the hat is a bit lighter....

Must have been how they were making the felt a few years ago...

I like the color much better than the current natural though so it was a win for me....

I have a quick question. I have my head conformed on Art's gadget, and samples in hand. I had previously stated that I was getting a black and gray hat. Im really torn on the gray color. I was looking for a "traditional" type of everyday gray. It looks like its coming down to Granite and Blue Smoke. Any suggestions or pictures of the two colors? Im a bit concerned that the Granite might be a bit too dark, but then again it might not be.

Thanks!!

Oh, on a side note, the plastic shaper thing, it can feel a bit tight pulling on and off, but its barely touching my skin at each prong. Did I conform that right?

Isaac, if you look through this thread you'll see hats in both these colours. I think the Barnstormer hat just a page or two back is Blue Smoke.

I don't have either, but both are very nice. If I were to get one, I'd probably go for Granite.

It is funny, now im torn between steel and Blue Smoke. I dont like all the brown highlights throughout the Granite. In the end I will probably go with the Blue Smoke, but I may leave the decision to Art on a personal preference.
