Expedition to find the Lost City of Gold

Hi guys

In August me and a group of friends are heading out to the Amazon in Peru on a self funded expedition to locate Paititi, the lost Inca city! We will also be making a documentary to chronicle the expedition.

We are all really excited about following in the footsteps of the likes of Percy Fawcett and heading off on a really old school adventure.

Not sure we can go all vintage in the gear though that would be great - there a few modern conveniences that I will glady take (anything for battling mosquitoes for a start!)

I had a co-worker many years ago who was a classic example of the saying that only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the mid-day sun. (Seems that you may be one, too.

)
She was an anthropoligist, and had made several trips to the north west Amazon, on the east slope of the Andes, to study the head hunting tribes there. She used to BRAG about how many parasites she had picked up while there. Apparently it's basically impossible to go into that part of the world without contracting some form of malaria. The more trips you make the worse the level of infection becomes.
So please be careful and take all anti-malarial precautions possible, as well as all other precautions.

On the subject of anti-malarials, be sure you can tolerate the one prescribed for you before you leave! Many, and I am included among them, cannot tolerate larium, the normal 'default' drug. It makes me nauseous and gives me violent, psychotic nightmares. Others have suffered psychotic breaks as a result of taking it. If it works for you, there is nothing better but please beware that the side affects can be disastrous. Should I venture into malaria country again, I will stick with melarone.

Perhaps just take gallons and gallons of good, old-fashioned tonic-water to fight off malaria. It's what it was invented for, after all...

Thanks for the advice on Malaria tablets. We are recommended which one to take based on the regions we go to - we will start taking them a week prior to travel so hopefully that will tell us if we have any allergies.

That course of medication indicates Lariam. If you tolerate it, fine, but about 25% of people treated with it get adverse effects. Be careful.

I had an aquaintance one time who was a gold hunter. Cleaning up all the little stuff left by the Spanish. He mentioned to me once that he had to leave the greatest treasure he ever found in the bottom of a grotto somewhere in Equador or Bolivia (can't remember now). A meteorite the size of a Volkswagen beetle. So much for such things!

Thanks again for all the encouragement. I do intend to keep a field journal whilst out there and have been thinking that if it proves interesting I might try and turn it into a book of some kind.

Ken, sounds like a great adventure, you'll get to know your comrades in ways you've not known them before, and you'll learn about yourself as well.Whether or not you find the lost city remember this; 'It's the journey, not the destination that matters.'
