Amen to that! As far as someone depending upon some article or "rules" regarding the limits of fashion, I have to wonder why anyone would desire to live upon what someone else would write? I can find a book that may say it is great to eat a fly from a dead cow's behind, you would not find me in the desire of doing so. If you like what you wear then wear it. If you like bright clothing color, what it the point in not wearing it if you like it? Being well dressed is not always predicted by what anyone else says or does, but upon how it fits you and does it look presentable.
Now of course, I would not approve of someone wearing spandex hot pants to a funeral...

I wish seeing a man in an all white suit during the "cold season" reminded me of Tom Wolfe, but honestly it usually reminds me of a certain Kentucky Colonel. Truth be told though I can only think of one time where I saw a man wearing an all white suit in the winter, and that was at fundraiser.
I wear summer clothes so long as there is summer weather. Here in upstate New York in the Tug Hill Plateau/ Black River Valley area such weather never last that long after Labor Day. Soon enough it will be time to get out the heavy felt hat and overcoat till April/May..... Oh what happiness comes with eight months of winter....:rage:.
Any man who puts their hand on my hat will windup with my boot up their.... behind. That's vintage north country hospitality.

I only make a point of following rules if A) there's enforcement, or B) there's a pragmatic reason. The former is pretty self explanatory. The latter applies here. I stop wearing "summer clothes" when it gets cold out. I don't worry about what colors I wear when. Color-wise, all I care about is if I think it looks good. I focus the majority of my attention on trying to look different in such a way that people know it was deliberate - not laziness. I say, wear whatever you feel like. If someone is bothered enough by what you're wearing to let you know about it, well, you probably wouldn't like the person anyway, so you didn't lose anything.

I think that winter time is when we really need a splash of color to combat the greys, blahs, and general drearyness of winter. Of course, growing up in southern California there wasn't much distinction in what we wore between summer and winter. In winter we'd add a jacket if necessary. As an adult and after leaving SoCal I'd hear a reference to no white after Labor Day, but never paid it much attention. Still don't. Of course, I don't often wear white to begin with!

This rule is claptrap coming out of the eastern US where they are unable to wear summer clothes in the winter. It should be common sense for them.
In areas that do not have inclimate weather during the winter, it is more than reasonable to expect that they will wear reasonably appropriate clothing. Like they are wearing three piece suits in Hawaii during the winter.

That does happen often here in Michigan. I will see someone wearing basket ball shorts and a winter coat. It makes me wonder if that is all they own?

A white suit would be a hard one to wear if it is really winter around my area,(snow and slush = bad salt stains and road grime) as it would not stay clean very much. I have worn a cream colored heavy silk older Lanvin suit with a black top coat a few times in the winter but that was only to special functions I attended and would not make a regular practice of it.

Here in San Francisco, it is only after Labor Day that we get anything resembling Summer weather. It has been foggy, cool, and grey for most of the past three months, with maybe a bit of sun in the afternoon. Actually, most of Northern California has been having a cool summer. Sacramento hasn't hit 100 degrees F all summer. Today is the first day San Francisco might hit 80 degrees. Time to break out the linen suits.

It has indeed been a lousy summer so far---even on this side of the bay. Many new records for cold being set this year.
I think I have worn a hawaiian short about three days out of those three months. It has been three piece suit weather.

I like to dress for the weather. So if it is 85 degrees out, I really don't care if it is Feb. I'm wearing something cool. Likewise, if it is freezing and there is snow falling from the sky, I don't care if it is June. I'm pulling out a wool skirt.
