*Snoods*

I just had to say- I have just bought two bun/mini snoods and I LOVE them :D you know, not the kind that go over most of your head but they just cover a small part of your hair at the back.

Both of them have barrettes attached, one has a big cream satin bow with a white net, the other has two big black flowers with pearl centers and a black net. Finally I have an elegant solution to bad hair days/ winter weather, I don't know whether they are authentically 1940s but I think they look a bit more elegant than my usual bandana/headscarf updos. Plus it doesn't necessitate setting my hair, so if I know we're going to have a long spell of bad weather I know not to bother- snoods to the rescue :D

Plus, I have a spare black net, and instead of just throwing it away I attached it to a giant red rose corsage/ hairpin, so now I have three! I'm especially pleased, cause I always want to wear the rose, but it looks too big when I pin it to the side of my head.

I am excited, in case you can't tell :p

Yes, pics please! And place of purchase, too. I think what you're describing is something I have been looking for - kind of what dancers wear, like a mini-snood, but with pretty pretties attached. I saw a vast array in Thailand and have been looking for them since!

Thank you! I feel a bit apprehensive at posting pics of myself on the internet, for various reasons, but I could post a picture of the snoods if you really want? And you should go for one (or two...or three :D)! I have a feeling I'll be wearing mine most of the time now, seeing as they are practical, elegant and fairly weatherproof :)

Frenchy...I think we all totally respect each other's comfort level with regard to posting pictures of ourselves. You go ahead and keep to what works for you. No pressure. :) ...but, if you'd like to post pics of your vintage items (sans the hooman who wears them) feel free! That's pretty much all I do.

Hello, sorry for some reason I only just saw your post. I bought mine from Ebay. Here's a link to the seller's shop, they have a good selection: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/ITS-AMAAZING/_i.html?_nkw=snood&submit=Search&_sid=134632139. If you look at my description of the ones I bought you will probably be able to see which ones they are. I should point out they are obviously not vintage, sorry if I gave anyone that impression.

Let me know if you buy any! :)

I believe there are a bunch of people that sell those on Etsy. Search for "bun cover" rather than snood.

Paydirt! I tried bun snood as well and both work - cheers for that idea! I tried on Ebay but will try on Etsy, too.

I've got a few on the watch list now (including a couple from Thailand, funnily enough) - I'm kid in candy store at the moment! No worries about them not being vintage, but I think they'll be great for a polished look for those can't be asked to wash and set days. Many thanks!

Having searched for a while for a snood for myself and after comparing prices, etc I decided to learn how to crochet (it could come in handy in the future!) in order to make my own! Here is a pic of it at the moment:

Given that I only started learning a few days ago and that this is my first attempt I'm quite pleased with it! The most difficult part is deciphering the pattern (so much short hand!), but I'm on the home stretch now! Hopefully it will be finished tomorrow!

Looks really great what pattern are you using?

Just curious about something: has anyone used a hairnet as a snood? Like, getting a regular hairnet and just putting it over the back part of your hair and putting some rolls and a flower in front, for example?

I ask because I'm not 100% keen (or confident enough) to wear the crochet snoods, but I think they look really cute with rolls and a flower. I'm finally giving in and buying some proper hairnets, so I was wondering if it'd look okay like this, or if anyone actually does this?

I've tried this, Frenchy. I didn't have much luck but I think I can attribute that to my lack of skill in doing my hair. I would suggest, though, a hairnet that has a fairly coarse weave rather than a thin "invisible" hairnet. It might just look like you're on your way to the lunch room if it's a disappearing one.

Thanks for your reply :) well, the whole dinnerlady thing - if that's what you were getting at with the lunchroom comment :D - is what I'm scared of! I'm not sure how thick these hairnets are but they don't look especially so, plus as they are black and I have blackish hair they will probably look invisible anyway... do you think this could be a major faux pas? :D

(I get enough funny looks anyway, dressing retro, especially when I wear a headscarf over my rollers in public... *sigh*)

Frenchy, I recently got some regular hairnets that are really fine and almost invisible. When my boyfriend saw me wearing one like a snood for the first time, he said: "Oh, you look just like my grandma!"
Not really a nice thing to hear but I'll try to wear them with flowers or something the like as you suggest. That might make it look a bit less grannyish.

Wahine, I got mine today and they sound just like yours, they are so fine, they feel like spiderwebs! I've tried them the way I was talking about and I don't think it looks too bad with a flower. It's a nice way to keep all of your curls together if it's a windy day, anyway.

Also, from the way it looks when it's over curled hair, I realised that in some pics of 40s actresses I've seen, they might be wearing super-fine hairnets. Maybe!

I LOVE my snood. I would like to get a couple more in different colors too. So practical, comfy, easy, and pretty too. I bought mine on ebay from aine06. She makes them by hand from a vintage pattern and the yarn she used on the one I purchased is about the thickness of a pencil lead. For my taste it's just right. The ones in the pictures on the lady in red are beautiful too!

I am in need of laundry folding while children are asleep, so I couldn't go through the whole thread to see if these were posted or not. Here is an address for a free crochet 40's pattern http://www.allfreecrochet.com/Crochet-Accessories/Perky-Snood# and there is another site that converts it to knitting. Here is a cute snood that has almost a headband piece http://marthac.info/snood2.html and this last one is awesome http://marthac.info/snood1.html. I think I am going to try to make one for the days when my curls are going flat, but I don't have time (or I'm in the garden earlier) to set it.
