My acorn Stylemaster is my favorite hat, so far. But I"m not really fond of the ribbon. I'm thinking of replacing the ribbon with one that is a bit darker brown - more of a contrast. Question is, has anyone here changed only the crown ribbon but not the binding on the brim? I'm not sure I want a contrasting ribbon on the brim, but wonder if two colors of ribbon would look odd.

Another option is to leave the hat alone and enjoy it as it is.

Slow to the party and not the colour you were after, but here's my Moonstone Stylemaster, straight from the factory.

Nice color! It's not available over here from any of the retailers in the US. Is that as it is sold in Australia with the black ribbon or did you custom order it from the factory that way? That combo does look good! Dresses it up a notch :)

The standard Moonstone model at the store where I ordered it has the matching hatband now. I special ordered this one, but when I got the hat and posted that picture here a few posted theirs, also with the dark band. I have to order my hats anyway because of my big head, so while I was at it, asked about changing the band. The seller phoned the factory & they okayed it on the spot.

Just a question for all the Stylemaster owners: how casual do you you think the Stylemaster is? I've read a bunch of posts saying that it looks best with a suit or other formal wear, but do you think it could work with say, a t-shirt and khakis? Would I be better off with a Sydney/Fedora? Thanks!

I think color may have more to do with it than either style hat. I have a brown Stylemaster and a dark grey Sydney/Fedora and I tend to wear the Stylemaster with khakis or jeans more than the Sydney. I believe that brown just looks less formal than dark grey. The brim on my Stylemaster seems to be just a bit wider and that may have something to do with it also but generally speaking, I think either hat can serve formal or casual occasions.

Good point. I concur that color has more to do with "formality" in two hats that are very similar. I to have both a Sydney ( in the Regency Fawn) and three Stylemasters ( Acorn. Carbon Grey, and Mid-Brown) and wear all with khakis and jeans ( t-shirts are reserved for yard/house work not in town for me :) ) though my Carbon Grey Stylemaster gets worn with a suit/tie more often than the others. It all really comes down to your age/physical shape and how YOU want to appear to others. Both these hats are made on the same block with the same taper and the brims are both 2 1/2" wide just the Sydney has a taller open crown.

Thank you for your help. :) Do you think it is work paying the extra $30 for a Moonstone Stylemaster from HatsDirect? I've heard that Moonstone works well with a wide variety of clothing.

It's a pretty color. I have a Squatter in that color and it works with a lot of colors for sure. As to whether it is "worth" the extra dollars depends on you. Do you want it, do you mind waiting the extra time if it is not in stock ( can be up to three months at times from the Oz retailers), and are you going to get it with a darker color band than the matching one it comes with which will effect it's delivery time. Only you can answer these questions which you should ask yourself. Stylemasters are some nice Akubra's and I like all of mine for sure.

I wear my moonstone stylemaster casually with jeans and a t shirt. It goes very well. I also have a carbon grey fedora which is more formal. I'm wearing it today with a charcoal pin stripe suit.

James,
Since you live "down the street" so to speak from The Hattery maybe you might know why the different retailers over there do not use the same color names as the factory does in describing the different colors of the models of Akubra's they sell. Example: Factory says the Squatter comes in Steel Grey, and the Hattery calls it Carbon Grey. I have a DM Squatter in the Steel Grey which is a nice medium Grey with some blue cast to it and I have a Stylemaster in the Carbon Grey which is a Dark Charcoal Grey. Does the Hattery carry discontinued models and colors as current stock or does the factory do the changeing of colors etc. regardless of current stock on hand at it's retailers ?

Here are two Akubras hard at work. The bass man is the Lounge's own Dundee, sporting a Campdraft in Taupe Fawn, and I am playing the guitar and wearing a Federation IV in dark brown.

Snowy River and Stockman

We recently purchased some Akubra hats. My grandfather was a station manager in the NSW outback 100 years ago. (We're now in Calif.) I've always wanted an Akubra. The first 2 are my wife in a Stockman, I flattened the brim. The next 4 are me in a grey Snowy River with brim flattened and a Santone Snowy River, again with a flattened brim. I really like the quality of these hats. I'm thinking of adding a Banjo Patterson. Then the big purchase, a custom beaver Penman Indy. Not sure why but I can't seem topost pics. Will try again.
