Thank you guys and dolls!

I LOVE Dita's "normal girl" outfit - would have loved to have seen a full-length shot.

Can't wait to see everyone's costumes this year, especially the Gaga one, Amy Jeanne!

Like I said, there are always LOSDS of non-Hallowe'en costume parties at my uni, so I thought I would post a couple of other pics... like I said, my friend Joe and I quite often do a combined outfit, so I'm with him in a lot of the pics!

This is from a political occupation that was happening at our uni... people were being so ridiculous about it and acting as if it were some kind of sixties original peace movement (and that's coming from someone who supported their cause!)... so we decided it would be much more fun to go dressed as... Jefferson Airplane.

We also went to a party themed "Fire in the Disco" - you had to come as something related to Fire or Disco (!). So we decided to be Miss Havisham from Great Expectations (who dies in a fire) and Mrs. Danvers from Rebecca (who apparently sets the house on fire):

He's wearing my dress and collar!

At Cambridge we have "college families" and traditionally get "married" to someone of our choosing in the first year. We had a Hall (think Harry Potter gowns and candles and long tables) for "Stags and Hens" in which we were meant to dress as famous couples... a different friend and I went as F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald:

I've been sewing, sewing, sewing, and more sewing getting gowns and underpinnings made for the last couple of weeks. Not done yet, just stopping by here for a moment while I take a back break! For Halloween weekend here are two events that I, the Mr. and my two teens are going to be attending. Both nights wearing the same outfits; Friday is the Halloween Party at my local ballroom/social dance haunt, and Sat. is the Gaskell's "Fancy Dress Ball".

My dd (now 17yo) will be wearing a Mum-made Regency/Jane Austen style gown of antique gold silk dupioni overlaid with an orchid netting embroidered in gold and silver threads, embellished with jewels. Long white gloves.

The outfit I've made for myself is an 1880s three piece (bodice, underskirt and overskirt) bustled ball gown of peach embroidered silk and peach/white striped dupioni silk, with english netting lace, and silk roses. Petticoat, bustle pad, corset, chemise and drawers underthings, all made by me- except the corset. The underbust corset is from Gentlemen's Emporium. Pearl and cameo jewelry, white wrist length gloves.

My 15yo son will be looking resplendent and well matched to his sister's outfit in a purple Regency tailcoat with grey trousers, white gloves.

The Mr. will be dressed 1850-1880s style; wearing a black cutaway morning coat, stand up collar white shirt, cream jacquard puff tie, black and taupe patterned DB vest, black high waisted pants with button on suspenders, silver pocket watch on a chain, grey dress gloves, brown gambler's hat. His outfit is from Gentlemen's Emporium.

^ lol

I posted this in another thread, but I remember a few years ago, Dita went as a "normal girl" for Halloween with the bronzer, blonde wig, etc. So funny!

DVT: Every year for Halloween I dress up as a normal girl. So this year, I wore jeans and little fleece-trimmed Ugg boot-type things and a t-shirt and a blonde wig and a tan....I went to a big party here in L.A. I went completely unrecognized, which was awesome. Not one person knew it was me. I was with my friend who's a famous TV star and everyone was saying, 'Can I take a picture of you?' to him and no one asked me for a picture which was really great.

*lol* She looks like she did before she got into burlesque!

Don't worry boys, post away!

I've never heard the turnips thing, and I'm English... we always make Jack-o'-Lanterns out of pumpkins too!

I would love to see all of your Hallowe'en pictrues - including the kitties!

I go to quite a lot of costume parties when I'm in Cambridge - our college holds them three times a term, and then obviously people have them too... so I try to be imaginative with my outfits. A good friend and I quite often go to these events together, and last year for Hallowe'en we dressed up as the Cold War - he was Capitalism and I was Communism.

Worn dancing Friday and Saturday nights.
I'm a lady of the 1870-1880s; bewigged, corseted, and swathed in silk and english lace
I made these pieces of my ensemble,- drawers, chemise, bustle pad, petticoat, underskirt, bodice
the bustled overskirt was a bit complicated, so that I hired out

My two teens, I made my daughter's Regency gown, of gold silk dupioni with an orchid coloured embroidered and bejeweled overlay. She borrowed my vintage gloves. Son's regency jacket borrowed from a theater costumer friend. I made his neckerchief.
Oops, my son forgot his neckerchief on Saturday.

My boyfriend and I are notorious for leaving our costumes to the last minute. I grabbed some fake blood from the pharmacy, put on a old black dress, ripped hose and bow in my hair and went as a dead doll.

My boyfriend had a black turtleneck, cigarette holder and beret handy, so he grabbed my liquid eyeliner and went as a French artiste.

Maybe next year I'll plan ahead...

I already went to a party.. and you can see mine as my avatar pic.
I guess it should be something like 1950s "Pagliacci " look. Like an Italian clown (this makes no sense.. if you haven't seen them..) :)

The "dear" creature next to me is Mr. Jack (the pumpkin king from "Nightmare before Christmas").

I am Irish and we grew up with carved turnips at Hallowe'en. I never saw or heard of a pumpkin in Ireland at any time of year when I was a kid. Either they were not available (quite likely) or my parents just never bought or ate one.

Samhain, the pagan celebration in which Halloween is rooted, originated in Ireland. Jack O'Lanterns were made from turnips to begin with. The pumpkin came in when Irish immigrants arrived in the US bringing their folk traditions with them. In the absence of turnips, the pumpkin was used as an alternative. Sadly, as Halloween through the twentieth century became a big commercial deal in the US which has, in turn, been exported to the rest of the world, we have seen the pumpkin replacing the true original tradition. I'm petty enough that I refuse to have one in the house and only will use a turnip. It's much more work to carve, but so much more rewarding. That and I'm much more likely to cook with the removed material, so less wastage (I do love my turnip).

As can be said for every single holiday anymore. The past century has whittled away most traditions unfortunately.

A lot of them, even a lot of the ones invented during the past century. ;) Christmas over here still seems to be largely based on the Victorian take thereon. I suppose with Halloween it's just a bit more galling for me in a way because I grew up with it as a folk festival, at a time when to a lot of English kids, even, it wouldn't have resonated a whole lot more than, say, the Mexican Day of the Dead. It seems that over the past decade or more, commercialised Halloween has supplanted Bonfire night, which would have been the more English tradition (and, similarly, in Ireland we were very aware of the Bonfire night tradition in England, but it was as alien to us as, say, the Fourth of July).
