Thanks a lot, clabbergirl and sheeplady!

clabbergirl, how do you pin such a thing? I have pretty straight hair and my new haircut doesn't hold a curl properly. No idea why. The only way I can think of so far is putting two pin curls crosswise. But it'll be kinda hard to stick it that way through the cap.

sheeplady, I agree with you that accessories can make a big difference. Besides some berets, I don't have any hats yet. I'm so insecure of what kind of hat would look good on me (which isn't typical for me, since I'm pretty sure of what clothes to wear). I always thought I have no "hat face" but once a hat sales lady told me "There is no such thing as a hat face, there's only the wrong hat" (she didn't have the right hat for me anyway)
Plus, I have a large, laarge head which means most vintage hats will not fit me anyway

I think she´s right. I for example prefer hats that sit on the side of my head or are asymmetric. A symmetric hat on top of my head makes my head look rounder and shows all the asymmetry going on in my face. Not good at all. I think that´s why I love hats of the 30s and 40s. Lots of dramatic asymmetry

Your crocheted hat for example suits you, but I think it needs another hair do. Don´t unravel it. Maybe you get a new haircut that takes a curl better and the hat will look perfect with it. And it´s your first finished piece. That alone would be a reason for me to keep it

Good point! I was only thinking about unraveling it because I'm a real penny-pincher

But I'll listen to you ladies and start the matching cuffs soon. No vintage pattern for that, so I'll have to improvise.

Kat, I'd like to see a pic of you with an asymmetric hat!

Haa, that's great! You're right - asymmetry is really your thing. And this one even goes wonderful with your glasses (when I had glasses, I had even more problems with finding a hat).
That birthday card (if it is one) on the wall is kinda spooky though.

Hi all,

Sorry if I'm encroaching on a ladies area of the lounge, but this seemed to be the only thread active and suitable.
Having been taught to knit as a child, by my Nan over summer holidays whilst I stayed with her, I have recently taken the hobby of knitting up. What prompted this, you may ask? The birth of my first child and lots of time off work!

I have completed a few simple projects (blanket, teddy bear, etc), but this is the first clothing project attempted. I used an old pattern I found in my parents attic (no pictures of what it should look like), but changed up the colours a little. Fairly happy with it, but it could be neater, especially the neck, but it does fit which is an achievement in itself!

Please let me know if I should not be posting in this section!

Very nice! And how nice of your grandmother to teach you the skill. Men were the first knitters anyway, and it used to be taught to youngsters as part of the general upbringing. What is your next project?

Thanks for the lovely comments.
With regards to my Grandmother, I didn't thank her at the time, now however I think it's great.

Not sure on the next project, need to go through some of the patterns my mother has at hers tomorrow (and steal her needles).
Anyone have any suggestions?

A simple little hat will get loads of use now the weather here has turned so chilly. New babies need to keep their heads covered as they lose so much heat from them!

I just learned how to knit yesterday! I somehow kept on increasing my stitches on the first go-around with the scarf, so I unravelled the lot and started again, all by myself (pretty darn proud!)

Here it is so far:

I'm using vintage acrylic yarn from Eaton's, a now defunct but famous Canadian department store. Not too sure of the year though. I'll be sure to post my finished product.
