I can't get a front pinch that looks decent.. it just looks... smooshed? In the picture below, you can see how shallow that pinch is. The rest of it creased fine, but that front pinch looks pretty bad and I haven't come up with a way to fix it, yet.

This may be a stupid question, but have you gotten it wet? Steam, distilled water in a spray bottle, rain? I found that my Fed IV didn't really "take" the crease like I wanted until it got a little moisture.

Not a stupid question at all! I have a 6-quart Griswold aluminum kettle that I fill up and then rock the high heat until it's boiling like crazy. That thing will scald you good if you're not careful.
Since I've not had any trouble with other hats of various kinds, I'm forced to believe it's the Akubra felt. Mind you I have not saturated it in the shower, but I think that's a little drastic for a new hat.

'Fraid your pic does not show clearly what you say " .... just looks smooshed" . Do you have a frontal pic of the crease? Do you mean that the front crease is not close enough or deep enough? From the pic it sure looks like a decent front pinch. Are you looking to make a "Raiders" style of sharp front crease? I've worn and creased Akubra's for over 30 years now and they have all creased as I wanted with a liberal use of steam and get "fine-tuned" with rain as they get worn. I've even been able to re-work one of my pre-creased Akubra's , a Cattleman, after 3 thorough dunkings in a stock tank (courtesy of one of my horses) . Please explain a bit more clearly

Ya know, after taking a look at it compared with my favorite Borsalino, it's creased in as much, just not as nicely as I'd like. I'll have to spend some more time with it, then, before complaining more. However, it's true that I like the Borsalino much better.

I find water much easier to work with because it allows more time to work the material. For that particular hat, I'd wet the whole top and experiment with a tighter pinch and a center dent which I have found allows a tighter front pinch. You can always put the c-crown back in afterwards.

I soak my new hats crowns as well for creasing. I put the hand held shower on mist and it takes no time at all to get it very pliable. The cool mist actually soaks in much faster then just the normal spray. Heck, I planned to wear it out in the rain anyways.

No. Save your money. For the same money, and a little patience, you can pick up a nice fur felt homburg (Stetson St. Regis is a nice model) on ebay. Homburgs generally go pretty cheap, so you should be good. Those wool felt hats really don't hold up.

I strongly recommend shaping with steam only. It is very forgiving, and can you can resteam often until you achieve your desired shape. I don't like to use water, as it can distort the shape so that the wetted part is tighter, or looser, than the unwetted part of the hat.

Hey guys my local Men' shop was having a 50 percent off sale of everything in the store. I went in and bought a Stetson Saxon fur felt for 70 dollars. I was wondering if this was a great deal or not? It of course is fur felt and I will be posting pictures once I get my camera to work!!! Just curious if I should maybe go buy another!?

Yep, I picked up an Adam wool homburg for a movie prop for a series of short films I'm working on, and if there's anything left of it, I'll probably sell it afterward. Not my size, so I don't want to keep it, it'll just be taking up room. I might end up letting an actor keep it, or something. I got it for $8, though...

'Modifying' historical hats...
I am anticipating receiving an old hat that belonged to a famous person...who had a small head I want to wear it, which means I have to stretch it from 7 to 7 1/4. It was expensive, but in the end, it's just a very nice hat and it needs to be worn. Is it possible to stretch it this much without ruining the sweatband? I would, of course, send it to Optimo to give it its best chance of survival. And if I'm lucky, it will be a 'big' 7 and I can squeeze into a big 7 1/8 if necessary.
