I recieved some Freddies of Pinewood last week. I ordered the 1950's Utility Jeans and the Dungaree Dolls. My waist is 26 and my hips are 34. I ordered the 26 waist. They fit fine. A little bit loose, but not loose enough to go down a size. Plus they are brand new, I think they may shrink after a few washes. The quality is great but I have found a small issue with my utility jeans and I plan on contacting Freddies of Pinewood. It may be a pattern issue(?). The button on the waistband, is perhaps 5/8" towards center front. This means the waistband pulls out/open, I get diagonal wrinkles from hip to center front and my seams on the left side all curve sharply near the waistband. It's so easy to fix; I just need to re-sew the button so the waistband is tighter. But I paid 45 BP. In any case, I will let them know.

High Waisted Pants & Jeans!

i bought the 1940s work pants in the 30inch waist, so not sure if i've gone a size too big. has anyone else got these pants? sorry if this is already been in the thread. i haven't been on FL for a while!
anyone out there got the 28inch waisted jeans? how do you find the waist if you are between sizes? are you comfy in the 28inch even though you maybe bigger in the waist?

i actually think the measurement charts are a bit weird. i measured the 28inch waist on chart for the 1940's work pant and its actually ends up 27.5 inch, so i thought i would go up the size. turns out they are a bit big so i have a little extra material in the 'crotch' area. so interesting to read all the girls out there whom have the 'freddies' jeans.

I have the utility jeans form Freddies too. I originally erred on the cautious side and bought a 32 but they were very baggy at the front. I changed them for the 30's and whilst they are a litle snug when freshly washed they give slightly in wear. They hold their shape and don't seem to go very baggy in wear at all.

I have now tried them on today and they are really great! They call them military jeans on the webite, but they really are more like sailor pants, with a straight leg and i a nice dark blue with a bit of stretch. Definitely on my wishlist now.

Certainly not exact repros, but for "vintage-inspired" I noticed some high-waisted pants at both Ann Taylor and Talbot's recently. On talbots.com search "hepburn" - there are several pair of dress pants as well as some jeans.

I recently finished making the Wearing History Smooth Sailing Pants and they fit like a dream! I made a few alterations, which included adding a couple of inches to the leg length, taking a little fullness out of the hips, and adding a little extra length in the rise. I have been craving a pair of high waisted pants but I have been extremely worried about them not fitting my 5 foot 11 frame (high waist and long legs.) They were so easy to put together and I think they maybe took me 5 or 6 hours total. I continued on to make the shorts with the same alterations and those only took me 3 hours I think. I'm very much looking forward to making more!

They are denim with stretch, like that really dark indigo denim, and quite strong but comfy. They come in three lengths. They also have the high waisted style in a black corduroy, but for some reason the cords gaped at the waist on me while the sailor ones don't. Let me know what you think once you tried them.

I have a pair of Heyday! swing trousers and I love them but I just don't have the cahoneys to wear them. I have proportionately quite a big tummy (because of it, my hip measurement is 45" whereas my waist is only about 30" on a good day) and I feel REALLY self conscious of it. The trousers really just highlight the problem! Especially when I sit down, when they can pull across my tummy and cut me in half. I'm already wearing Spanx underneath them and I just don't know what else to do.

Cute trousers, I looked at the site.
I notice the buttons on them begin at the waist and continue diagonally down the hip - this is no good for you, since it draws the eye up and down this area and accentuates it. I suggest removing the buttons and placing them down the front of the pants, like this:
Having the buttons in this pattern will create the opposite effect. (You can add a zipper or replace them with matching coloured buttons if their former position is where the pants do up). Also, I'm not sure what colour you bought your trousers in, but I hope its a dark one - pairing dark pants with a light, preferably patterned top will add volume to your upper half and appear to balance your figure.

Thank you so much for your help Actually, the buttons are the only fastenings the trousers have so they have to stay in the position they're in as I don't think a zip would be particularly flattering there. They are, however, in the same colour as the trousers so they're not too bad. I have them in dark brown because I figured this was the most serviceable colour whilst still being flattering (I was so tempted by the plum, sigh). I think I might just try to knit up/buy a few brightly coloured fair isle sweaters to wear with them because, like you said, it'll draw the eye northwards. I am currently making a bright red blouse with bishop sleeves so hopefully that'll be enough interest to draw the eye upwards. This is why I've never worn trousers as an adult, it's too confusing for pear shaped people/people with tummies. Especially when they have proportionately small waists. I swear, it only serves to accentuate my tummy!

I just saw The Help (really good, btw) and I have a mad desire to get my hands on a pair of those high-waisted capris that the girls wear in the movie. I tried to find a picture, but was unsucessful. They are pretty standard, though. Think Mary Tyler Moore. Does anybody know of a good pattern? I tried searching the Simplicity and Butterick sites and couldn't find anything.

Freddies of Pinewood make high waisted capris for a fairly reasonable price. I also got a plaid pair from H&M in November for £15 (actual price, not sale!). Otherwise try searching 50s and 60s patterns on Ebay by searching pants , capris and pedal pushers. There's quite a few on there whenever I've looked.
