How Much?

I have a question for the ladies who sew. How much yardage in a 60" wide wool would be needed for a floor length evening dress? I am thinking two & a half yards, but I would like to know what some of you who have sewn garments have experienced.

It really depends on the style of gown. Is the skirt straight or a full circle, pleated and worn over a 1950s crinoline, cut on the bias? Is the bodice spaghetti straps or long sleeves. The two gowns below are both evening gowns but wouldn't have the same fabric requirements. I would need more info to make an estimate.

I am sorry, I forgot to menton more specifics. It would be for a mid 1930s long sleeve gown. I hadn't planned on whether it would be on the bias or not. I am designing the dress from an idea I have sketched. If measurements would help, I am 40-31-45.

Something like this takes 3yrs of 60in wide for a size 40 bust.

Since you're designing the dress yourself, I'd probably measure for yardage after you've got your pattern made up, when you make your mock up. I don't know if you're flat patterning or draping, but you can lay out all your pieces on an open space and give yourself lines (like ribbon or yarn or a measuring tape like you use for home repairs- the big metal ones), and measure the length and width. If you're planning for 60" wide and want to cut the fabric double, lay them out in 30" of width and don't forget to add space for selvages. If the pieces are too big to cut double, give yourself the full 60" width and mirror them place pieces face up and face down.. dont know that your design will be like, but depends on that (like if you need to cut one of some pieces if it's a wrap dress or assymetrical).
