If you want a reproduction and you are on a budget, I would recommend Flight Suits, AKA Gibson & Barnes. Another budget possibility would be U.S. Authentic Company.

If you can afford a high end jacket you could go with Eastman Leather, Aero Leather Clo., Real McCoys New Zealand, or Lost Worlds Inc.

I DO NOT recommend Cockpit/Avirex jackets. As I said earlier, if you are budgeted, then go with a Flight Suits jacket, they are way beyond Cockpit.

By the way, the Navy flight jacket is a G-1 not a g-i. Good luck.....if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

Kojax,

I picked up what I believe to be one of the nicest G-1s I have seen in some time. It's quite a rare bird as you really don't see too many Werbers floating around these days. It's a very nice a gently worn Werber 7823 (AER) 1950s issue. Have a look. Just a little example of what you can find on eBay with a little work. I thoink I paid roughly 250 USD for it. About a 1/4th of what a new Eastman would run you, and it's an original.

Steve, you on a roll right now?

That's one beauty of a jacket and went for a song! Where on earth did you dig that one up? Do you find your lucks' in because you can fit the 38" chests which were more common 'then.' As today's average chest is much bigger.
I love the mouton on that baby too. You know I sold a NOS 55j14 and now I'm thinking. maybe a G-1 or an M442 would be nice....[huh] I've got to see the doctor about this!!!

I picked it up some time ago...It was a BIN, so I was just lucky. It wouldn't have lasted had I not got it. It was also a U.S. sale only, which I should not have bid on. But, sometimes it's better to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission. He ended up sending it to me with no problems. I was planning on having it sent to my father and then have him ship it to me. I couldn't pass it up.

I haven't seen many of these Werbers around, but if you ever get a chance to get on I highly recommend it. The Canadian made Bell Shaped Talon is a little strange, I believe this is the only contract that used it.

All in all a fabulous jacket.

Estevan,

I wanted to thank you for posting this particular photo. As I also have a similar Werber that is currently being reworked at Aero in Scotland. The lining had been replaced and needed a good photo to provide the original or proper and placement of the manufacturers label.

Cheers,

i'll duck for cover after saying this, but if you want a current contracted g-1 jacket, and remarkably at a budget price, i recommend 'excelled'...you can go to leathercoatsetc.com and get an 'excelled' that is made under contract for the u.s. military (of course there are more than one contract made manufacturer currently, but i think these guys supply the largest)...g-1 link is:
http://www.leathercoatsetc.com/p-137-authentic-g1-navy-flight-jacket.aspx

surely economical as it, as well as all ever made, for the govt. were and are, however, no skimping, and totally milspec in fit and cut, of course with top entry pocks and everything

i know, i have one. used to be offered in goat and cow as per mil specs allow, but this doesn't say which this is...it's certainly not heavy, tho i got mine last year

it's made very well, and the customer service is not like uswings.com as if you have any problems with defects on several jackets sent in succession, they will continue to replace them rather than do a refund because they get sick of correcting their own mistakes (as happened with me on a uswings g-1)

ironically, uswings.com has started to offer some of the excelled miljackets, but leathercoatsetc.com has much better customer service if things really go wrong

a note is that the current excelled g-1 is totally milspec in all including fit and cut, but their a-2, while also being current supply milspec, meets the updated a-2 standards so is blousy, has no throathook and has side entry pocks...so beware if you are looking for milspec in the classic version...also, the older excelled you might find on ebay did have side entry pocks often...these current u.s. contracted jackets have top entry only, as well as usn perf

i had a gibson and barnes g-1 which is la creme de la creme in my opinion...excelled is right up there, except they don't have the korean war era scalloped pocket flaps like the g and b, and i did have to return one excelled g-1 because of a small defect...so if you go with them, do look over your jacket...they are made by the same unite factory in nj that makes schott, uswings and, obviously, excelled

p.s. if i remember correct wo going to the closet to check it, i took a 44 as the excelled seem to be sized rather normal...whereas in a 70s era trim milspec g-1 i'd take a 48 or 50...the cut is clean and trim, but the sizes are 1-2 sizes larger than the old milspec, so you might wish to go by inch count on armpit to armpit, they will give you that info over the phone, even measure it for you on the phone...super people...for $249, it's quite a deal

Kojax - I have a Ralph Edwards 1962 original G-1, and I have a Cockpit Vintage G-1without patches. I like the Cockpit jacket better than the original. The leather is thick and soft and just slightly distressed on the Cockpit, and the collar is the lighter color and smaller like the originals. They are pricey, but in my opinion a very nice jacket!!!
